Hello,

As I revisit and dedicate time to GPL, I'd like to ask for the help of the community to help me gather the latest - and greatest - updates for both Papyrus and third-party content. The goal is to converge the latest work into an organized topic very much unlike current scattered things we see everywhere. This includes content found in the GPL Preservation Society Installer too, just for the sake of completeness.

I am looking for help locating the latest texture work for:
- Cars
- Cockpits
- Gloves and arms
- Tracks
- Marshals and flags
- Team photos and badges

In a lot of cases these updates are meant for a specific version of content, which is only rarely properly mentioned. If possible I would also like to source the content for which the updates are meant. For example, using Monaco or Monza, we have quite a few updates available building on top of a different base. If Monaco Rocks Super Duper HD 2014 is the latest update for Monaco and it only requires the stock Papyrus Monaco, then great. If a Monza or Monza 10k Super Duper Kaplooper HD 2014 update requires a specific version of the track, or builds on top of another update, that should be specified so I can get such base update to apply the latest work on it.

I hope my post makes sense and the community can assist me in this venture. Ideally this will circumvent the issue of people having mismatched content or just old stuff, or newbies interested in GPL be put off or get lost trying to find material. If successful I can try doing the same for other F1 seasons or GPL mods. Cheers :).

For example, I know of Thomas Laechele's website where there are cockpits for the Eagle, Honda, and Lotus, and track updates but the track updates require sourcing the required and correct content for them to work.

I understand where you're coming from and what you ask certainly would be useful, but basically it boils down to "please construct a complete road map and complete information on everything the mod community did the last 10 years". Even if only for the original tracks and the 67 season, this would already be a massive task. The best the board tries in this respect is to get (a link to) all updates relating to one track or car in one thread. What I did was install the latest GPLEA, and then start searching the boards per car and per track for updates. You'll also notice that there is not one chronological path of updates per car/track. There often are parallel upgrades, and the best one depends on taste (you could assemble like 10 Ferrari cockpits based on different updates, to give just one example). One more thing: the Laechele updates normally work on the basic installer of the track name mentioned (Zeltweg71, Monza10k...). Of course, things like AI updates could be available separately.

Nicolas is right. There have been so many improvements, updates and extensions to GPL over the years that constructing a "simple" guide to the "best" content would be an impossibility. The best thing for a newcomer to GPL to do is to create a basic installation using their original GPL CD and the all-in-one installer, then play for a while and work out how you would like to improve things from there. SRMZ provides all the information you need, and gives tips on how to search for stuff, and this gives each individual player the opportunity to create the kind of GPL that they want, rather than sticking to a pre-defined list created by someone who may not share their tastes. And if you can't find something, you can always ask in the appropriate section of the forum.

If I may think out loud, maybe you can make this yourself.

I see a website with the titles:
- Cars
- Cockpits
- Gloves and arm
- Tracks
- Marshals and flags
- Team photos and badges

If you click on the title it opens a list of (example) - cars.
If you then click on (example) Eagle you get a page with all links to all the updates for the Eagle.

It would be nice if everyone could add there link to the download site..
Like the "Linkpage" or "Wikipedia"

So far my little contribution to this project. ;)
Happy lapping!

I agree with the above. There is no best for everybody. We all have different taste. I have no idea what updates i've used over the years, but it's a lot. When I get everything I like I make a copy of the whole GPL folder. If GPL gets messed up I can just delete everything in the GPL folder, and copy in my saved copy. I must have done that at least 50 times over the years.

Well, I will keep digging on my own as I try to piece the latest work for each category. I don't understand not understanding or agreeing with this idea, even at SRMZ the forums are a mess with loose, replicated topics, broken links, and incomplete information.... all which I seek to address.

I think the problem is who's going to do it? It's a ton of work, and only one person is asking for it. Maybe you could do it?

While it might be possible to specify (or at least narrow down) "the best and latest" gfx updates for some tracks, because there exist updates way more praised/popular than the others (e.g. multi-season updates for Zandvoort and Mexico), I cannot see how it could be done for cars and menu screens, because there are many, equally good options to choose from and the choice of the "best" one is entirely dependent on subjective opinion.

I am trying to gather it myself as much as I can to make it easy for others, and I will upload it to my mega.co.nz folder for sharing as well. I have been spending hours digging through websites and this forum and the idea was for knowledgeable members or those "in the know" to post sharing. I remember coming across much improved marshals, I am going to try to find that again.

I've been trying to gather the latest track updates I can find (priority being original GPL content) and I may have finished that for at least the tracks I have in my HDD. When possible I go for the proper good-looking specific update over multi-season but that may not be possible with Zandy, Mexico, and the unfinished Kyalami.

As was mentioned. The latest is not going to be the best for everybody. I like a lot of versions that might be older than the latest, but I like them better. Some will like the most realistic to 67. Other don't care about that, and want the best looking one.

Just like the 1.07 installer. I haven't left any of the tracks, or cars the way they came in the installer.

I think a large part of the problem is that this "site" is a forum and as such, its structure is really not suited in terms of organising and showcasing the different mods available.

Also, the fact that a lot of them do not have previews doesn't help matters either.

A more traditional website with user comments explaining the items is more helpful.

In a forum, things tend to get easily lost in between vast comments and discussions and also things are simply not able to be organised as the could be on a traditional website.

In terms of showing what kind of alternatives there are, fred faster's site was quite good for this back in the day, but is now rather outdated.

In terms of Ferrari updates that you wanted, i cannot find the Nino's garage High-Res normal Ferrari (see here https://web.archive.o...ns/carskins.htm )

The only one i can find is it with different exhaust / rollbar textures, and as i haven't dled it i don't know if it is the high res version or not https://srmz.racesimcentral.net/inde...showtopic=10173

So i think you are out of luck trying to find the original.

I think nino also made a high res 512*512 honda update but i cannot find it anywhere.

So yer for a lot of things i think you will be out of luck - at least i cannot find them now the sites are dead. If they are on these forums then i certainly can't see them :S

OK here goes:

These are my recommended updates for the 1967 GPLEA cars. Install them in the right (a,b,c etc.) order.

1.) First, start out with the latest GPLEA versions. Most of you will have these, but the 2004 demo never included the very latest versions of the cars (some small tweaks here and there) and some of you will still be running the old Honda's, the new ones were not available on the old GPLEA site but at Mike Tyler's "Nino's Garage" website. I have since added them to the new GPLEA website, which you can find here:

https://www.grandprix...ds.co.nf/GPLEA/

2.) Brabham BT24:

a.) Jackseller cockpit update: https://www.f1legends.../cars/braby.php 'Cockpit Update with Anderson and Mitter cars'.

3.) BRM P115:

a.) BRM P115 Thomas Laechele steering wheel: https://srmz.racesimcentral.net/inde...=60#entry104617

- Chosing the P115 will get your graphics to correspond with Papyrus' physics, as it was the P115 they modeled. But of course you can also chose to drive the P83 should you want to. Differences are a slightly different nose and coolant pipes running on top of the tub on either side of the cockpit, as well as a slightly different interior. Historically, only 1 P115 was made, it's a lighter version of the P83 specially built for Jackie Stewart. The rest of the BRM drivers were running P83's.

4.) BRM P83:

a.) BRM P83 Thomas Laechele steering wheel: https://srmz.racesimcentral.net/inde...=60#entry104636

- The P83 steering wheel has a more brown color compared to the P115 steering wheel.

5.) Eagle AAR104 - Weslake:

a.) Mario Müller cockpit update: https://srmz.racesimcentral.net/inde...?showtopic=9658 (Mario_Müller_Eagle67 Cockpit.zip)

b.) OPTIONAL 67 Historical McLaren cockpit https://srmz.racesimcentral.net/inde...705 (files inside 08-CAN_v2.rar)

- The McLaren cockpit is not available as a loose addon (at least not to my knowledge) and will ONLY work with the original GPLEA Eagle, and NOT with the Mario Müller cockpit update (wrong gauge needle locations). Would be nice if someone could make at available as a stand-alone addon and compatible with the Mario Müller cockpit update by moving the gauges around. I would but haven't got the time :( .

6.) Cooper T81b

a.) Jackseller cockpit update: https://www.f1legends...cars/cooper.php

b.) Dede Jackseller update update: https://srmz.racesimcentral.net/inde...675

c.) Silence steering wheel update: https://srmz.racesimcentral.net/inde...?showtopic=8154

- I know of Van Rossum high res engine textures but do not have them.

7.) Ferrari 312 with Parkes car:

- This is the Ferrari that I use and feel is the most representative of the season. It omits the aluminium engine air scoop on the side only used in the beginning of the season, has the option of a clear windshield like on Mike Parkes car, and also omits the faired in mirrors which were only used early season, and has them painted in the mid season red color (late season was chrome). Cockpit is slightly different to the 48v version, but the same as the 36v version except for the faired in mirrors. Outside is pretty much the same as 48v except for mirror color. BUT some Ferrari updates were made for the other Ferrari versions, it will take some tinkering to get the best of both worlds.

a.) Mike Tyler and Chaser's "Nino's Garage" Ferrari Parkes Update:

b.) Rock's Ferrari 312 cockpit update: https://srmz.racesimcentral.net/inde...?showtopic=3033

- Rock's Ferrari 312 cockpit is made for the GPLEA 36v version, but will work with the Parkes version EXCEPT for the Parkes cockpit. To fix this, AND use the historically correct Parkes cockpit, use my '66 dash:

c.) TvO Ferrari 312/66 update (Parkes dash): https://www.grandprix...ri/ferrari.html

- Paste the files fsteer2.mip, fsterlog.mip, pbody.mip, pdasha.mip, pdashl.mip and pdashr.mip into your ferrari folder. This will give you the historically correct Parkes dash, and a historically correct steering wheel. Copy over parinsid.mip and parinsir.mip from original GPLEA. Rev counter reading of the Parkes car might be off though, it has a different scale. I HAVE NOT tried this myself yet due to time constraints, but it should work. I should really release a standalone '67 Parkes cockpit update when I have some time :) .

8.) Ferrari 312 36v

- There should be a 36v Nino's Garage update but I don't have it. Maybe someone does and can upload it?

a.) You can also download Jackseller's skins which are equally pretty. They are also used in the 1966 mod by default ;) . https://www.f1legends...ars/ferrari.php

b.) Rock's Ferrari 312 cockpit update: https://srmz.racesimcentral.net/inde...?showtopic=3033

9.) Ferrari 312 48v

- There should be a 48v Nino's Garage update but I don't have it. Maybe someone does and can upload it?

a.) You can also download Jackseller's skins which are equally pretty. They are also used in the 1966 mod by default ;) . https://www.f1legends...ars/ferrari.php

b.) Mario Müller Ferrari 312 48v cockpit: https://srmz.racesimcentral.net/inde...showtopic=10255

10.) Honda RA300:

- Chosing the RA300 will get your graphics to correspond with Papyrus' physics, as it was the RA300 they modeled. But of course you can also chose to drive the RA273 should you want to. Differences are a completely new Lola T92 IndyCar tub (hence the nickname 'Hondola') coupled with round style exhausts. The RA273 has a Honda home made tub and straight exhausts, but also has the option of the RA300 round exhausts.

a.) Thomas Laechele cockpit update: https://www.thomas-la.../gpl/index.html (scroll down) NOTE: v2 rasterisers required!!!

11.) Honda RA273:

a.) Jackseller cockpit update: https://www.f1legends.../cars/honda.php

12.) Lotus 49 - Ford:

a.) Jackseller cockpit update: https://www.f1legends.../cars/lotus.php

13.) Lotus 43 - BRM:

- Only used at Kyalami (first race), but perhaps fun to use with GEM+ engine switch option (although I'm not sure if anyone still knows that this option is available :D ). To get the Lotus 43 - BRM with proper tailor made phyisics, download the 1966 mod, as it is in there :) .

a.) Jackseller cockpit update: https://www.f1legends.../cars/lotus.php

EDIT:
all of Jackseller`s (F1Legends) files are avaiable here:
https://srmz.racesimcentral.net/inde...showtopic=12780

__________________________________________________________________________

These are my preferred updates, although that doesn't mean I don't like other updates produced of course! For instance, I like Jackseller's Lotus cockpit better, but some people may prefer Thomas Laechele's as it's also a work of art. Also, I don't like Björn's / miklkit's (Mike Wilkerson) 'rear wheels in mirrors' addon so didn't mention it, but if you do, now you know what to Google for ;) .

Very informative post, thank you TvO. You have brought up a couple of updates I did not know about! I have uploaded Nino's Ferrari v48 512 resolution as you "asked" :).

Edit: Also added the 36v higher resolution file.

Errata to TvO's post - It's Van Gossum, not Rossum :D (just for the sake of easier googling around). He did lots of very good high-res. engine, tyre and wheel rim updates for '67s, but I don't know it these are easily available anywhere now.

It's kind of sad that a lot of speedgeezers hosted content has been lost. It would have been cool if there would have been news that they wouldn't be hosting sites anymore so all the content could be backed up here or people could personally have warning to download from the sites.

I guess that's what happens when games get really really old.
It's just kind of sad things get lost without warning.
Mind you it pales in comparison with what happened with all the RSC content :/

I was shocked too when i started with GPL on 2013 and joined this wonderful community. Now, i perfectly understand that many people still plays GPL, it just delivers fun and loads of classic content not available on any other sim. GPL and GTR2 will be always my favourite :D
