Hi folks!

I am looking for any oval setups, and hints for making oval setups. Well, to be honest, I am a road racer and only drive ovals in N2003- usually. But I have had a GPL league race in Indianapolis, and will have one in Nazareth (using the Brabham).

So far, my knowledge is the following: a car should have less spring rate at the left side, to make it turn better. However, I have no idea, if I am right or wrong. Plus dampers+ovals are a miracle to me... I will attach a replay where you can see my first crappy attempts at Nazareth.

I hope you can help a GPLer with this.... strange... track... corner.... Well, it is called Nazareth. :D

Ciao
Antonio

PS: This might be the place to post ANYTHING oval setup related.

Here go some setups for GPL oval tracks.

About general rules for this kind of setups, well, I would say that the right side should be softer (or much softer) than the left side. Soft setups will give you more grip than stiffer ones, up to a point of course.

As general rules:
- setup should be done to help the car to turn to the left, period.
- you must do different setups for the qualy and for the race. The 1st one should be good only for 3, maybe 4 laps, while the race setup should last for much longer than that.
- be careful with the right front tyre. In any case, it must not get more than 26/27PSIs after 3 or 4 laps (qualy setup). The race setup should be able to keep this value in the 25/26 range.
- setups for oval tracks are asymmetrical and so they are quite unstable under braking. Use the brakes very gently.
- the right side of the car should be softer than the left side, and the front side softer than the rear side.
- if this helps your driving, you can use 30/85+1 up to 6 ramp angles but be careful when under throttle ;)
- race line is everything at ovals, so you should waste time analyzing replays ... where to lift off, where to go full throttle, car's attitude, race line, etc etc etc.
- watch your mirrors right before each turn ;O)

finally, be extremely patient ;)

For hints & tips, go with Arturo's, he's a rather experienced Oval driver
and can teach any 'ol dog new tricks...

Here's some setups that I always use, these are from Chris Moses and
are for the Eagle (which is probably the best car for ovals)... :cap:

I have done my race at Nazareth, and to my surprise I have won. It was a turbulent race, and with 16 drivers it was really crowded. However, my setup didn´t match Arturo´s hints and advice. I found out that one should consider that a oval specific setup needs a totally different driving style, and thus lots of practise to get used to it. I am a road racer, ovals are not often on my schedule. So I drove a neutral setup, with adjusted camber.

Here is what I found out for my setup approach:

1. The tire temperatures do not matter, what matters is the handling of the car in the long runs. Of course, good temperatures help.

2. The tire pressures should not be any lower than 18 PSI, lower pressures tend to let the tires run on the outside edges, reduce grip and make you slide more, hence you get no benefit from the low pressure- and maybe even higher temperatures.

3. Use a stable car setup, and maybe reduce the anti roll bar stiffness a bit.

4. Drive extra smooth, it pays off more than two magic setups together. ;)

Well that´s about it, I can just tell you, once in a while it is nice to run an oval. Like in the champcar series, it is fun- and a real challenge, to lap others in such a narrow place like Nazareth.

Ciao
Antonio

Since where ovally talkin'  here  ;)

Does anyone know if there's an improved AI for Waterloo?

I've noticed that the AI racepace has a mismatch at the s/f line causing them to slowdown and speedup again. They also are very fund of flipping off the line...total carnage. Now i'v managed to cure the s/f prob by hacking the race.lp but the rest is probably a bit more difficult to repair

Btw, Arturo great tips on those setups gonna try and improve my results for Waterloo with this new info

Didn't think that the setups would still be available.  Great now how about the tracks. Does anyone have them to download?

Have a look here Paco

The GPL Alternative Track Database, you will find the oval tracks and by clicking on the setup links for each track you should be able to get some setups also.
