My installation of GPL is running fine.  I can open VROC, chat and join races there.  I can also go into GPL Multiplayer and join iGOR listed races.

But when I try to run igor.exe from GEM or directly, it appears in the task manager for a moment, and then disappears with no error message.  My OS is Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit and I’ve tried running iGOR with my anti-virus software off with no help. UAC is disabled.

The path to iGOR is set OK in GEM.  I have IP=gplrank.info in igor.ini.  I tried commenting out that (;IP=gplrank.info) and got a message “Unable to locate any race list servers.  Check igor.ini”, then nothing.  iGOR didn’t start up.

I tried deleting the path to GPL in igor.ini and was able to run iGOR (I see a racelist with the mods unrecognized and I can see chat) after the message “Could not open gplmods.ini” and “Last player chosen cannot be found as a players/player folder” until, in iGOR options, I set the path to GPL by browsing to the GPL.exe location correctly (was blank - now listed as C:\Games\Sierra\GPL).  Then it wouldn’t run any more on restart.  This looks like the clue to my problem.  As soon as iGOR knows where GPL is, it no longer runs.

Any ideas if I’m doing something wrong?  I think there’s some problem with the files gplmods.ini, gem.ini or igor.ini, but I can’t seem to find where the problem is.

As you've forgotten more about GPL than I'll ever know, Bob, I'm sorry to say that I can't offer a solution.

I certainly hope that you can pin down this gremlin soon.

Best Wishes.

I think there’s some problem with the files gplmods.ini, gem.ini or igor.ini, but I can’t seem to find where the problem is.

gplmods.ini file is written by gem , to make it run gem and exit (check igor is not running when you do this)

another possible problem is if you have installed gplsecrets folder (gem/igor) inside your program files folder , best place is in the root .

So what's in the .ini files right after the GPL path? Looks like it's "LastPlayerID" then a bunch of window parameters. Are the GPL paths the same in all the .ini files?

I have C:\SIERRA\GPL and GPLSecrets in the Programs Folder, though I'm running XP.

that’s fine if your running XP , however with later windows OS it's recommended not to go into program files , just like gpl shouldn't go there .

Bob, I know I might sound ridiculous but did you double check that your GPL directory has the indexing service on? (see pic)

Another thing, with the recent platform update for win6 64bits I had problems with iGOR after a first install; it didn't recognise the chat anymore.
I went back to a previous date with  system restore and everything was fine.
I then tried installing all the advised updates that I had made invisible during the time, installed again the platform update over it and now iGOR runs OK.

I had the same problem. Indexing was on, but some windows update changed something and it all stopped working.

I’m sure that you’re all waiting on the edge of your seats to hear the solution to this mysterious glitch.  I was surprised that no one else got this problem, so maybe it’s unique to me.

I found out that the culprit was a single corrupted track folder where I had a track.ini which had somehow lost all line breaks/carriage returns.

I had no idea that something as small as that would stop iGOR from working.  I wonder why iGOR would read any or all ini files of all 415 of my track folders before selecting a track or race.

Great to see you back Keith.

The solution to this started like this.  When I deleted igor.ini and restarted iGOR.exe  a new igor.ini was created.  It needed a path to GPL so I tried pointing to another bare-bones installation I have and iGOR ran OK.  As soon as I pointed iGOR to my main GPL installation, it wouldn’t start.

So I started to think that I could make the other installation the main one by transferring over parts of the old one, but paying attention to what got copied over when it stopped working.  The first thing I did was copy over my tracks, since I thought that was the least likely culprit but right away iGOR stopped working.

So I copied over groups of track folders and narrowed it down to one track which was the problem.  I had fiddled with the track.ini for that track and it got saved with no line breaks somehow.  So I realized that triggered to problem.

The next thing to try to solve is why the line breaks get lost, but at least my main installation of GPL is able to run and see iGOR race lists.

Gem+ adds some lines to the track.ini (all the [default xxx] at the end of it). maybe it happened that GEM+ crashed or something in the middle of doing that and left the track.ini broken. I'm totally guessing.

Very relieved to learn that you sussed the problem, Bob.  Then again...  If any one was going to find the cause and cure, it was you, amigo.  :)

All of them I think.

What I did was move all but 20 tracks out of the tracks folder.  Then I moved 20 back in at a time until I got the problem.  Then I moved the last 20 out and 5 at a time back in to narrow it down, etc.

Get me responding to a thread that has not seen action for years - but thanks for the helpful information!

GEM was fine, iGOR didn't seem to start at all (dedicated server running under WINE / Linux).
Similar to above, iGOR would start if the ini file was deleted, but not once the path to GPL was in place.

Thanks again for the helpful tip - it WAS due to issues with a particular track.ini

Following up on Bob's original post. I had the same problem he had with the last player chosen error showing up. I tried almost all of the solutions he tried. I have 85 tracks so I'm not going through all of them. I finally solved the problem when I found my GPL backup of my install from 2018. I pointed igor to it and it ran fine. I renamed my GPL folder and copied my backup install to my GPL Hard Drive. Tested iGOR and it ran, then I ran GEM made my adjustments for FFB etc. closed GEM and iGOR stills runs.

I'm still not sure what went wrong, or what it was, but at least I have iGOR working as intended. It might not have been a track.ini, it could have been something else.

So  backup your working install of GPL!!  You never know when you're going to need it. I now have a backup, a zip, and my running install.
