I woke up this morning and buzzed for the nurse. She brought breakfast and wiped the drool off my chin, nodding absentmindedly as I incoherently blubbered “birthday” over and over. But when I followed that up by shouting “GPL” over and over, a light came on in her mind and she said, “Oh, you can’t be old enough to remember that old game!”
I pushed her aside, grabbed my walker, hobbled over to the PC and fired up my favourite Simulation. The haze cleared from my eyes and brain. My arthritic hands became stronger gripping the Logitech steering wheel as I heard the roar of the Ferrari’s 12 cylinders and imagined myself in an exotic cockpit on a track half a world away.
I was young again and full of a thirst for speed and the kind of courageous that you have when you know that you won’t get hurt when you crash and burn. Ah yes, it’s been a good start to the day.
