The GPL Wikipedia is a community-driven resource initially developed by the GPLPS in conjunction with the SRMZ to provide a central location for all things GPL. In today's changing simracing landscape, we feel it is imperative that the many facets of GPL should be easy to find and readily available. Over time, with the help of the community, we hope to achieve that goal. As it has always been with GPL, we are nothing without the support of the great GPL community.
We have choosen to have only a closed editors group but for sure we'll appreciate anyone who would like to join and contribute. If you have something to add to the Wiki please feel free to contact us via PM.
We are: David Fletcher, dangermouse, Bill, Arturo Pereira and Bernd Nowak.
The reason for closed editing is to avoid spam bots. 10 years ago this would have been no problem. But we're only a small group and this would be to much work for us.
There's a lot missing for a start but this is because we need you guys and we need to ask original authors for permission to publish on the Wiki.
The advantage of the Wiki system is that it has a full-text search capability and doesn't refuse short words like 'AI' or '65'.
So the Wiki should be used to gather stuff like AI creating, track creating and maybe even car creating. Additional stuff like GEM carset customizing is welcome too.
Or the whole world of setups as well as trackguides. The Wiki does not have advanced media handling but the ease of writing as well as searching is a definite advantage!
We appreciate every feedback as well as suggestions and questions. To make it easy please post them in this sub forum of the SRMZ which dangermouse and Bill manage!
Enjoy it.

Great idea! The FAQ page will be extremely useful now that RSC forum pages disappeared. Thanks to all editors!

Looks interesting. What I don't see though are links to other sites. Keep up the gud work.

If you take a look at the Community Portal (Left menu) you see some basic links.
But the Wiki should be not about links. stuboyle has done an excellent job with the gpllinks site. It's about full text searchable information about GPL.
At the moment I'm trying the GPLEA track creating guide and I'm in the process to verify it's usage as well as to add some more information.
Like I said in the openning article here we would be happy if other guys would help to fill it with information

Hi Bernd,
Good initiative! Although I'm not sure the GPL Faq is entirely up to date. I checked and searched for a tip on GPL stutters which I submitted to Bob Simpson a while ago and didn't find it (although I think he did include it):
"However, there was one considerable improvement. From Googling 'Win98' and 'Disk swapping', I found this tip on Windows forums:
Quote:
ConservativeSwapFileUsage was added in win98. And the default is 0. Setting it to 1 makes it perform more like win95. According to tweak guides, win98 by default likes to go to the swapfile even when there is free RAM. By setting the value to 1, the OS will use more physical memory before using the swapfile.
After adding 'ConservativeSwapFileUsage=1' to my System.ini file, and having Windows manage the swapfile again, the 'reloading' and disk trashing/stuttering during a race seems to have gone.
..So it looks like a considerable amount of disk access is actually caused by dumb programming in Windows itself (gee, why am I not surprised... 'Let's hit the swapfile *before* using the RAM' <slaps forehead> ).
This helped me fix serious stuttering problems using GPL, which got worse when I installed the memory-heavier 66 Mod.

Suggestion:
GPLEA tutorial still mentions many outdated programs, even including height editing by Excell sheets or binary edition of 3do objects, at most the "Assembly" 3do language used by Paul Hoad. It could be interesting to have more details, not only the theory, about the ones used nowadays, we have a few versions of trk23do and new options to edit heights, for example.
Also didn't see anything about HSV files written there.

In a first step we have transfered the original ones.
For sure it would be great to replace the outdated stuff with new one but there has not many requests or offers to help.
I did start my own track project but has been very much busy in other, in my view, important GPL projects
But yes, I agree it's outdated. To much knowledge is fragmented into to much threads here and I assume lost at the RSC.

Nothing wrong with using Excel for doing altitudes. All of my tracks are made that way since Excel is really easy to use. In fact, the vast majority of track editing tasks can be done using Excel to handle and rearrange long lists with only small final changes to reconvert to the final required text formats.

the wiki is a great thing! but as the gpl links page has been mentioned above, i wonder if that is still maintained, as i recently found quite a lot of dead links, which annoyed me then, so maybe we can have an updated version of that for the wiki as well, made up into categories. like not all links on one page, but just the track editing ones in the track editing section, etc.
oh and i would love to see someone explain to me the intricacies of .3do car editing. moving polies, subdividing them yet keeping the same texture on them, etc.

As every wiki, the wiki needs input in form of articles from the user.
We have made the work to transfer some pages to the wiki because we feel that the search engine is much better then having several pages and rely on Google.
Another reason for me is that we want to give most information on a central place and easy to save for us. Over the last weeks my own time has been limited because I had to many other GPL stuff and some things in real life.
Stuart is maintaining the gpllinks list and I know he's around but I think he's busy with real life.
Sorry, to have only a closed wiki but it's easy as drinking beer/water to have access to the wiki and help. Just a short PM and we'll give you access. At least if you have something useful to add
Like you said there's a lot of knowledge around but unfortunatly a lot of this knowledge is in the mind of the people and some of it may be very hard to explain. Other knowledge is lost due the still unreachable RSC.
It would be great if more authors would allow us to transfer articles to the wiki

Just FYI chaps, please change the erroneous Track Guide wiki part for Zandvoort to no longer include that darn outdated reference for the so-called "Zijn Veld" corner. It drives me that I still keep seeing this popping up in GPL documentation.
As everybody probably knows by now since I've said it xxx^2 times at RSC, there is *no* such corner at Zandvoort - it's a translation error from the old days by Papy.
(It's "Jan de Wyker Zijn Veld" - or 'Jan de Wyker's Field" in Dutch. Nowadays it's mostly known as the Slotemakerbocht. In Papy days it may have been known as Jan de Wyker - doubtful - but certainly not as the "his field corner".)

Interesting Rudy
I wanted to change it but this is very interesting. According to the track map Zijn Veld is the slight left hander where Jan de Wyker, is the next slight right hander. So what do I need to change ?
And I have the problem that when I change it don't fit for the trackmap
What I have found is that the name of the second corner (the first one has no name) was Jan de Wyker Zijn Veld ( https://www.circuitso...Kaartje1948.jpg and Papy did a clever trick seperating this name and use half for one corner and half for the other corner

Well, the track map depicting a 'Zijn Veld' corner is definitely wrong of course, and it should be deleted from all GPL references, it's that simple. If the first corner of the two has no name, simply refer to it as a whole as Slotemakerbocht, the one before Scheivlak. (..or as the No Name corner, I don't care, just don't ever call it 'Zijn Veld'! )
