Why don't you just test it, and save replays of any possible accidental WRs? GPL Rank admins will hopefully decide eventually what to do with 60 fps WRs. Submit it when they have decided.

Well, I'm limited on time I can hot lap and race these days. I don't want to waste it by running some good laps and potentially improving my rank into the top 5 of the 67's on some chassis, only to find out later it was a waste of time.

If I had more time, I'd be a willing guinea pig though. :D

I too have a CRT. Is it much, much better on a CRT at 60fps/60Hz than the old 36fps Nuwanda?

In a way I want to try it, but then, even if I create another player, if I bust off a really good lap and beat a personal best, or worse, get a world record, how will I know if it was the patch pushing me over or just a really, really good lap? Quite the dilemma.

It`s at least worth a try. It`s much, much smoother on a CRT at 60fps/ 60Hz than 36fps. But you have to adapt to the lower refresh rate, which can be a problem on a big CRT. Eyes can get tired more early.

@Brr:
I have tried 60 fps @ 80 and 90 Hz and it seems to be a little better, but this can be just placebo. It is still far away from the smoothness I get with 60 fps/60Hz.

    60 fps stinks.  :swear:

    Because...

...when I go back to 36 fps it feels like a slide show.  :P

Tell that to certain league admins so we won't have to go back

The Mybroga Racing server, (one of them) is already running a test at Mosport at 60 fps,  looks incredible, I'm sure it won't be long before all of them are on it.   Great work guys  !!

Could you tell us if there is a chance in the future to have this major improvement also without gem+ because I'm really no fan of it.

    Pleeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaase. :bounce:

You only need to run GEM+ once to apply the patch. After patching, start gpl directly from gplc67.exe (or other exe if using a mod). A stand-alone patch is not a good idea because there are different versions of gpl.exe and GEM+ takes care of the differences automatically when patching.

I am very appreciative of the work Petteri has done to provide this patch and I agree it is a tremendous improvement, but I am also wary of this causing further splitting of the GPL community. Do you have any concerns for people with older spec machines who cannot run 60fps?

Will you have the same concerns about future mods, which are probably too much for some people with older spec machines? If you do, what is the practical solution?

Petteri, my comments weren't meant as a criticism. As you know we have discussed this within the test team and we concluded it was always a possibility that the patch would cause further division, and we all accepetd that. I was merely trying to point out this possibility when it was suggested all servers will soon go 60fps (this may not happen of course).

At least with the mods there is always good old 67's to fall back to and there are still many servers running the original game. However if these all move to 60fps even the original game will not be available online unless you have a good spec machine.

Falling back to 67 is similar to falling back to 36 fps: it works if there are enough people falling back with you. Mods are different only in the sense that 67 is still preferred by many. If there were a "killer mod", consistently improving the 67 in all aspects, the situation would be different.

I would trust those hosting online races to know what they are doing. Mybroga seems to run just a test server, presumably to find out if all the members are happy with the performance. Every other league which is considering the 60fps seems to be doing the same. The league I'm in does not even consider it    The online split is inevitable, but many people have found that online 60fps is quite demanding so there is no need to worry that most servers would be 60fps anytime soon. As long as there is demand, there will be 36 fps servers around.

Yes, I think that will be the situation too and yes I also think despite the improvements of the current mods 67 still seems to be the most popular platform for GPL.

My earlier comment was just an attempt to prick the conscience of those who seemingly have the "I'm allright Jack" attitude!!  :)

I'm sorry Ken , but I think you took me a little too literally.   Obviously I was exaggerating.  Clearly there would have to be some serious testing and compatibility issues to be reckoned with first.

My comment was only to say that it looks so fantastic, only drivers who cannot run at 60 fps would want to still run 36 fps.

We all have to deal with the inadaquacies of our own systems, some will not be able to enjoy it, that is a fact .  I am not able to enjoy the benefits of OpenGL V2, because it doesn't run well on my system, I won't use D3D7 V2 because there is no Pribluda support for it yet.  So we enjoy what we can, I'm sure there will be 36 fps servers for a long time.

No prob Tidge, yes it is hard going back to 36.

I'm actually currently re-building my system and hopefully the new setup will run the patch easily, but I do know when we did a test race at UKGPL there were many who did not get a consistent 60fps. In many ways a varying frame rate is worse than a constant 36fps.
