I have always loved this track and can do lap after lap and shift + r late into the night. The Mountain course now purrs like a kitten after the sub-image correction. The Repository horizon is a fair representation of the actual topography at the track site.

      hi Kenny,

I may be misinterpreting your statements, and if so, my apologies ... but, as one of the original beta testers for Lime Rock, I felt a need to question, or at least clarify, your statements

      Quote

The Repository horizon is a fair representation of the actual topography at the track site.

your statement implies that the existing topography is not accurate

have you ever been to the actual track site ? ... many of the beta testers have, including Alison Hine and Nafi Coker, Nafi regularly raced his BMW at the track and provided in car video

Steve Smith, author of the Grand Prix Legends book, "4 wheel drift" wrote, "Brent Adams' original Lime Rock remains one of the most authentic tracks in GPL" ... he also wrote "Whereas Brent's 1.53-mile (and, with chicane, 1.54-mile) Lime Rock has been done in the modern idiom, the 2.93-mile Mountain Circuit is presented as it might have looked in 1957, when the track first opened to the public on the weekend of April 27-28.  Brent used (track designer) Loewy's renderings, contemporary aerial photography, an elevation of the proposed addition, topo maps, and modern 3D satellite views to make the layout as authentic as possible."

so, it is my contention that the "actual topography at the track site" is as realistic as possible, at least it was back in 2001/2, and far more accurate than a Repository horizon ... if Brent were around, I think he might question this statement as well ...  I helped test the original LRP for well over a year before it was publicily released, and I know all the incredibly hard work Brent did to make both these tracks as accurate as possible

if your implication was not as I interpreted it, then my apologies ... your Repository horizon certainly could be an alternative ... but to imply that it is more accurate is incorrect, imho

      Quote

"The Mountain course now purrs like a kitten after the sub-image correction"
... I think you are saying that you changed the sub-images to make for smoother graphics rendering for your system, not that Brent made any mistake that needed correcting ... of course, using the available tools, procedures and images from back in 2001 may make the track seem dated now, compared to more recently available tools, procedures and images

I realize you are replacing mips, etc in the interest of smoother running tracks due to your computer limitations ... and I congratulate you for that, smoother running tracks for all is a great contribution

I hope you take this not as a criticism of what you do, but simply a clarification of grammatical nomenclature

your "update" is a nice fictional alternative to an already topographically accurate, but also semi-fictional, track ... thank you for your work and best regards

      Bob

I think you are reading a lot into what I never did say or imply. I never said the existing topography wasn't accurate but will say now the existing horizon is ugly IMO and out of character with the rest of the beautiful track mips so that's why I replaced it. Also I never said the Repository horizon was accurate for this fictional track but after watching in car track videos this better looking horizon suits my purposes. That's my opinion and am also of the opinion that you are definately misinterpreting what little I stated. I've not been to Limerock, have you? Indeed this "addon" is fictional, just like all the rest of what I do.

Nobody is perfect including myself and I used Winmip to increase the number of sub-images because this track never ran that smoothly on my computer before. No one yet has created the "perfect" track, but that certainly doesn't mean what they did in their splendid effort to create a track in the first place was "wrong". There is a reason erasers are put on the ends of pencils,Bob.

I did apologize in advance (twice) if I misinterpreted ... apparently I read more into your statements than what you intended

I did say your update is a nice fictional alternative ... I didn't knock it, or any of your work, or your reasons for doing so

your opinion is certainly valid, as is mine

and yes, I have been to Lime Rock Park

      'nuff said

      cheers

Your Lime MC addon is billiant.  Transforms a dreary background into something really fresh and increases your enjoyment of this track no end.

Must admit to liking all of your work for GPL.  Thank you very much indeed.
