Used Avast ages ago, also Avira and Panda, using Kaspersky the past couple of years and quite satisfied with it.  MSE and Defender consistently score near the bottom in comparison tests.  But common sense is the best AV.

FWIW, I recall one symptom of my GPL/GEM issues was Gem constantly rebuilding one or more of the exes when started.  I often suspect some problems are just running this  ancient software on modern Micro$oft, newer windows sinking its tendrils into everything.

Ah, that's why I run GPL in linux, no spyware and no AV...

Eeeehhhmmm....no. ;)

It's actually up par with the other products.

I use ESET Smart Security and some of my mods wouldn't launch when they are not added to the HIPS (Host-based Intrusion Prevention System) exclusion list. Which is aimed at malware, not AV.

Could also be something in your firewall settings.

"While Windows Defender traditionally ranked below third-party antivirus software, it’s now improved enough to claim the number six slot on PCMag’s annual top ten list. Its malware detection capabilities have risen greatly, and it performed well in hands-on testing. Still, PCMag is half-hearted in their recommendation:

“Windows Defender is improving, but you still shouldn’t rely on Windows 10’s security tools as your sole means of protection. Many free third-party apps are more effective at keeping you safe.” — Neil J. Rubenking, PCMag Best Free Antivirus Protection for 2020

https://www.avg.com/...ivirus-software

But use whatever you are comfortable with.  What is "best" one year may not even make the list a year later, and often it takes secondary programs, such as Malwarebytes or Unhackme, to give satisfactory protection.  I currently use, and recommend, Kaspersky Free, but also run Unhackme along with it.  (And once a month I clone my entire drive to an external drive ... the ultimate protection, lol.)

Why did windows, by all standards the worst OS thirty years ago and still the worst, become the number one OS worldwide?  Because the options (OS2, etc.), while better, all required DOS;  Bill Gates licensed DOS to all the manufacturers quite cheaply ....with the provision that on any system on which they installed DOS they would also install windows.  So, as a manufacturer, you could try to educate a public new to computers to a dual boot system ...or just give t hem windows and hope to sell your better OS to those who recognized the difference.  We see how well that worked.

And while the developers of other OS listen to their customers and try to create what they want, Micro$oft's draconian programmers toss out what they want us to have and insist we use it their way.  Every new version of windows has removed more and more end user configurability from the OS (don't know what comes after win10 but perhaps MS will still let us select our own wallpaper).

Well when I think about Saiph I might have a related issue to the one I had in this thread. I got the backup to work , now I have that weird camera angle on replays (straight above with camera twitch) which I seem to remember you mentioned something about concerning gplshift in another thread , some sort of tweak you did to gplshift to straighten out the tv1 and 2 cameras on replays?

I have the exact same problem with GEM. When I closed it on Saturday I got this message, and since then it's all the same :(

I tried reinstalling, various compatibility modes, deleted gem.ini... I don't have any other av app beside the default win defender.

I'm using Win10 with all updates.

Any help appreciated.

Hi Jani.
Do you have a backup gpl.exe ?

Try installing the backup and start Gem+

Do you know that in Windows 10 the gem.ini and sgem.ini that GEM uses are located in C:\Users\Public\Documents\GEM+ - and I have no idea why.
