Just reinstalled the Gtr2 game, to play with my G27 shifter. I know some of you have experience of this game, so maybe some of you will have some answers for me to chew on?

I'm playing the game with my wheel. Question is, do I use the flip gears for changing gears or the shifter to go up and down the box?
I'm not sure historically, or car by car, how this was simulated in those years. I believe the game covers the GT cars around the 2003/4 seasons. Question is did they all use flip change or gearstick change, in those gt cars? I would just like to be more realistic. I have noticed though, some cars have a gear stick image, in the cockpit view, whereas some don't. So if that's the case, should I mix gear change methods to suit?

Also when I change gears, I'm engaging the clutch to change up/down the box, to again be as realistic as possible. Even though I could just push the gear stick into any gear I want, without engaging the clutch. Is there a patch, mod or plr file change, I could adopt (like GPL shift) where I have to engage the clutch, when having to use a realistic shifter?

My game runs flawlessly with no fps penalty at all. Even in full super high graphic settings. I believe that the Race Department site as an hq patch and anniversary patch. Are these worth getting and adding to the game, and if so, would doing this increase the fps, slowing down the overall game? As anybody used these 2 patches?

Finally I must say how I'm really loving this game once more. I've also installed some extra tracks, including the fantastic Nordschleife and it's a blast to drive. I love the campers alongside the track, and the fires at the side of the circuit. The night time driving is immense too.

Next up to install is GTL and Race 07 which are in my Steam library. Although I have the original discs as well.

Thanks all for any answers and tips πŸ˜πŸ‘

Hi, TP.

All of the games you mention are excellent.

Thay all run well on my old win7 PC.

I think that for the race 07 or race wtcc their is a caterham mod that is excellent.

As for the HQ stuff, bother patches you mention are amazing. Dont seem to slow down my PC, at all.

Paul.

Hi Paul

Ye I'm really loving my revisit to Gtr2. They are truly great games. If I had a better set up I'd love to try others like Automobilista, Assetto Corsa and Project Cars. Maybe the new F1's and even Iracing πŸ€”

I have Race WTCC in my Steam Library with the Caterham mod. But I was going to hold back, as I have Race 07 in the same library. Don't think the Caterham mod works for Race 07?

Ah the hq and anniversary mods for Gtr2. I may download them and try out. After all I could copy my base already installed Gtr2 folder, as a back up, to go back to if I don't like the patches or the game slows down on my system πŸ€”

I'll look at maybe installing again. I know I've played it but can't remember what it is like?

Maybe needs a revisit too πŸ€”

Those cars have different kind of secuencial gearboxes in real life...some times even power shift, so you donΒ΄t need to cut gas to shift. In any case you dont need the clutch, except for first gear. In real life some drivers will blip the gas on the downshift on 360 modena or a 550 maranello others donΒ΄t...I think that depends of how much you are pushing the diff on the braking...so you have to prevent diff lock...

Which shifter is historically correct depends on what cars you prefer.  Virtually all race cars through the eighties used gated shifters, many, particularly purpose built race cars, only used the clutch when first starting, once in motion the driver "floated" the gears (often non-synchro) by modulating the throttle while shifting.  From the nineties on paddle shifters became more common, though outside of open wheel racing, predominately paddle shifters now, the choice of paddle or gated is often merely driver preference.   In sims I always use paddles, perhaps not the height of realism for most cars but, for me, gives a little advantage to offset the lack of peripheral vision, tactile feedback, etc., inherent in a race sim.

Be wary of the many "anniversary", "essential", "update" patches/mods;  most are what i consider "kitchen sink" mods - all the various things the mod creator deems necessary for the sim compiled into one download ...you may or may not agree with their selection, and most will conflict with each other.  But, if you like vintage sport cars, the P&G mod is still the best (and it creates its own install so doesn't interfere with any other mods).

GTR2 has survived because, in my opinion, it is a complete, well balanced, package.  The other sims you mention excel in some areas but are lacking in others, none have single races, season championships, variable weather, day/night cycles, multi-class racing, decent AI, multiplayer, good FFB, good graphics, good physics, and stability, all in one package.

Hi TP

I am using the 10th Anniversary Patches for GTR2 and GTL and they are great. I have no problem using it for my CD game versions (bought before Steam existed). I am sure it also works well with the Steam versions of the games.

GTR2 10th Anniversary PATCH 10.0 (All-in-1 patch for GTR2)

GT Legends 10th Anniversary PATCH 10.0 (All-in-1 patch for GT Legends)

--------------

I also recommend installing the Power and Glory (P&G) mod for GTR2.
Here is a good article with screens and download link: https://www.racedepa...or-gtr2.152077/

If you do go for the P&G mod there is a program that shares the installed tracks between the P&G install and the GTR2 install called  PnG_TrackLinker to minimize harddrive space.

Thanks Hagapito, jgf, tdurrett and Stefan.

So it seems using shifter or paddles for gear change is my decision πŸ€”

I have Gtr2 installed by disc. I have Race 07 on disc and Gtl on disc too. But Gtl in Steam because I once had issues in the past with StarForce Protection.

The P&G mod I have a download from the past on my ext hdd somewhere. It may need updating and yes I really liked it when I tried it before. So I guess a revisit is on the cards. The track installer for gtr2 and Gtl I think I'd seen that but couldn't find a link with the demise of No Grip site?

I'm unsure about the patches for gtr2 πŸ€” I may try them out as said and if they are not for me go back to a back up folder πŸ€”

Anyway lots to think about. More tracks to download off if Race Dept. Thank you all again for all your help, links and tips!

Good tip tdurrett. I also use it.
It is hosted at SRMZ. :)

The track linker was just a graphic front end for creating symbolic links, which point a query to a different file/folder;  so, for example, you could have five GTR2 installs but only one would have a locations folder with tracks in it, the other four would have a symbolic link to that folder so would share those files without having to duplicate them.  (https://www.howtogee...ndows-or-linux/)

There are numerous utilities to help with creating these (I use them to keep game saves and mods from cluttering "my documents" on the C drive).  The main caveat is to never delete the link yourself, use the program to remove it;  otherwise windows, being innately stupid, will delete the folder to which it points.

If you have the original GTL, with Starfarce, it is basically useless.  Even if you can get Starfarce to function reliably (I never could) many files you will want to access are encrypted and there are issues with some sounds.   Some years ago Raceroom released a version of GTL with Starfarce removed, all files decrypted, sounds corrected, and "optimized for Vista/win7" (whatever that means), they even offered a free download with proof of owning the original;  I believe this is the version available now from Steam, though due to licensing issues many of the cars are not in the Steam version (you can find them online).    I rarely use GTL anymore, it is  a simple text edit to "convert" GTL mods to GTR2 and i prefer the features of the latter (the LM55 mod is a favorite - a Ferrari TR250 at night on Targa Florio, an Aston Martin DB3 in the rain at Nurburgring, a Maserati 450 anywhere).

A couple of sites worth visiting. All part of the same community

GTL https://www.altbierbu...dex.php?lang=en
GTR2 https://www.koelschbierbude.de/ GTR2
PnG   https://www.festbierbude.de/

Plus
https://www.evolution-modding.net/
https://trackaholics....otion.com/login

Many of the files lost when nogrip disappeared can also be found here..
https://tt.servegame.com:100/

As already mentioned it's fairly easy to convert GTL -> GTR2 or GTR2 -> GTL (Tracks and cars). Many mods such as the LM55 exist for both GTL and GTR2 and as jgf mentioned the Maserati 450 is a scary beast in any environment.

Wonderful stuff. Thanks Stefan for the link for the track linker, jgf for more info and Snafu for some great links.

I have Gtl on Steam but I may look at PnG again. Is it you need Gtl installed? To accept P&G. So will Steam install work as part of install. I have the Gtl disc but as I said it's got the dreaded destructive starforce. πŸ€”

Just downloaded loads of stuff for gtr2 of of Race Dept. Looks like that I'm going to be busy in the next week's to come πŸ˜›

Many GTR2/GTL files from Nogrip are also appearing at Racedepartment.  I've been ridiculed over the years for backing up anything i download - "you can just download it again if you need it" - and I think "RaceSimCentral", "Blackhole", "NoGrip" ...not to mention flight sim sites, rpg sites, etc. that have disappeared over the years. I have several hundred tracks for GTR2 alone on CD/DVD which I need to catalog to see if any are not currently available (would have been done a year ago were i not insufferably lazy).

I did upload the Reborn mod for GTR2 along with Von Dutch' AI Mod (including many pages from the thread discussing it).

You only need a, preferably clean, install of GTR2;  V1.0 or higher, P&G will upgrade to V1.1 and noCD during install.

Thanks jgf. Ah it's Gtr2 you need for P&G. I couldn't remember the format for thinking.
I have Gtr2 installed by disc. I could've done it I think with steam? Which readily updates your games. But I have 3-4 ext hdd's which are full of everything I have downloaded over the years, for various games like GPL and Gtr2. On one of those is patches and the P&G mod.
I just recently downloaded Gtr2 stuff from Race Dept because I only had a few files originally on my hdd's. Like you said and I agree I'm not getting caught out in the future by SIM sites disappearing. I used to love visiting Black hole and No Grip. Real shame that they have gone.

Ah the Reborn and ai mods. I think I downloaded them too. I'm sure I've got the no cd for gtr2 as I installed P&G before on one of my many laptops.

Thanks once more 😁
