I'm trying to copy cars from the original GPL to the new demo. I have tried copy and paste but they don't show up in the game . I tried renaming them also. Any ideas.?

I'm not quite sure what exactly you want to do but try this post.
If that doesn't help I recommend grabbing the 2004 demo and installing that, as it's the vanilla game and moving on from that basis.

You can install mods (and tracks) to the demo as described on the website/ instructions/ readme using the 1955 F1 mod for example.
But copying the original GPL cars (be it from CD or updated with GPLEA graphics) into the demo will cause problems, because the demo is missing several .ini files that are needed to make it work.
