So this might seem really weird, but I really want to install the complete vanilla version (i.e. only original Papyrus files and patches). I wanted to know what the best way to go about doing this is.

I have a US copy of the disc, and am running Windows 10. The game installs and runs fine using the GPLPS installer with all the added mods and patches, but I really want a separate vanilla install of the game.

First thing I tried was just installing it straight off the disc, it installed easy enough but wouldn't start. I tried updating to version 1.2 (US) using the original patch. But the patch's .exe wouldn't run on my computer, I get a "This app can't run on your PC" error. So then I tried using the UK patch which is a manual install (copy and paste), and that worked! The game booted up and I could set up all my options and configure the controls, but when I tried to start a session it told me to insert the game disc (which was already inserted). I assume that's a region code issue, using a US disc with the UK patch doesn't work. I can't find a manual install version of the US patch, so unfortunately I can't properly patch the game to 1.2.

Next thing I tried was using the GPLPS Installer and just installing 1.2 and not the 1.3 community patch or any of the mods. The problem with that is when the game launches, I can't assign my controls, and the install folder is still full of all the mod folders and programs (like Pribluda), and I really want to get a clean original install of the game.

Finally I tried the older All-In-One Patch, and again de-selected any mods or non-papyrus patches. The game booted up no problem, but again I was unable to assign any controls, and the menus were running very slow/laggy. So that method was out.

So far it seems like the best method was to install it off the disc and patch it the traditional way, but because the US 1.2 patch's .exe doesn't work on my Windows 10 computer, i'm at a loss as what to do. If anyone knows where I can get a manual install versions of the patch, or knows of a better method to install the original game, it would be greatly appreciated!

Hi, here is the steps (taken from GPL DEMO guide) for installing GPL and all the important patches manually.

1) Install GPL straight from CD just like the way you have done earlier.

2) Download GPL All-In-One Patch V2 from ( https://srmz.racesimcentral.net/inde...?showtopic=2621 ), run the installer and point GPL location to your game folder. (DON'T RESTART COMPUTER when the installer asks)

3) Download Nigel Pattinson's Rasterisers v2.5 (gplrast_v2.5.rar) from: https://srmz.racesimcentral.net/inde...?showtopic=3727
Then unzip and run gplrast_v2.5.exe, pointing install location to your GPL folder.

4) Go to your GPL folder and find App.ini, then open it with Notepad, change rd3d7v2.dll to roglv2.dll and save.
(This step is optional, it changes 3D Rasteriser that game will use. If you encounter graphic problem, you can try change to a different Rasteriser.)

5) Install GEM+ and everything else.
For more detail about GEM+ check "Easy Installation Guide" from https://gplworld.org/...tion-guide.html (note: the website is currently down, hope it will be back soon.)
EDIT: You can get PDF version here https://gplworld.org/..._ENG_v1.6.1.pdf
-----------------------------

Also since you mentioned about "UI and controls issue", make sure there is a players folder inside your GPL folder; or a better solution is to copy the whole players folder from one of your working GPL installation to the Vanilla GPL installation.

You're welcome.

Also I forgot to add one thing. The all in one patch includes Nigel Pattinson's Carsound patch and GPLEA Engine Sounds, which sounds different compare to vanilla GPL, and it seems no way to undo the patch. However, it is possible to extract original engine sound files then renaming them according to the carsound patch rule, which was discussed here: https://srmz.racesimcentral.net/inde...showtopic=12539

And to save you from all the troubles, the attached file below has all the sound split and renamed correctly. You just need to remove all the .wav files (keep sound.dat) from your GPL/sound folder, then extract those files into sound folder (backup first if needed).

If you want vanilla GPL you are done after step 1. Not sure the game will work in that state but everything below step one are community additions.

Another triumph! Seriously though thanks for doing that, you've been super helpful.

Installing from the CD just gives you the base 1.0 version. Papyrus released an official 1.2 patch, as well as patches to support D3D and OpenGL. On a modern system you can't get these patches to work, but with the help of some of the community installers you can patch the game up to 1.2 and get it working. The game itself is pretty much unchanged from the original on a visual and game-play standpoint.

We are getting into the ambiguities of what vanilla means. But as long as you know what you want and it runs without problems its good.

Plain vanilla imo would be using 67 oem physics with unmodified setup menu and only the DAT files in cars and track folders.
The easiest way to get that, if  that still works, is load up the 2004 Demo and remove everything but the DATs?
Then copy the Papy tracks in, (the 67season,ini file already lists them).

Maybe
:D

Is that real necessary to nitpick what OP said. Nothing wrong with GPL All-In-One Patch V2, it contains official 1.2 patch and every other important patches (such as CPU) that actually makes GPL run on modern PC. What's the point of discussion if you can't even run the game (GPL used to be very troublesome to get running back in the RSC days, players had to manually patch a lot stuff).

Agree with John, GPL 2004 DEMO is a good starting ground, and even that is patched with the same files (except new rasteriser), which includes the carsound patch.
And Nigel Pattinson's Rasterisers v2.5 is very important for running smooth graphics on modern GPU.
Those two patches contains no car & track updates from the community (texture, model etc) at all.
By replacing with the original sound files, player can get pretty much the same vanilla experience, which stays as true as original.

And all the mentioned patches are hard work from GPL pioneer modders, they made them so that people can still enjoy GPL til this day and probably forever.

I dont know where he is coming from, maybe he wants to see what progress has been made between the original graphics and the current spec. Or he just means the physics as programmed by Papy with updated graphics. This was more out of the ambiguity of what vanilla GPL means than anything else.

That said if you want the game as intended by Papy, go with the 2004 demo as a base and add the missing 10 original tracks and rasterizers.

Doesn't the 2004 demo have updated car graphics?

You can always just go into the Sierra\GPL\cars\cars67 folder and remove everything other than the *.dat files.

I wanted the original graphics, sounds, and physics. I want to play the game as it was designed by papyrus, albeit updated so it can run on my windows 10 PC. Essentially that's what I've got and i'm really enjoying it.

I'm a stickler for getting an authentic experience when it comes to retro games, GP Legends has been wonderfully updated and modded by the community over the years, but there's something really charming about the original.

Obviously the true "vanilla" experience would be playing it off the disc on a Windows 98 or XP PC, but that wasn't an option for me. But from what I can see and read online, the version i'm playing is pretty much identical to the original version of the game; the only community addons installed are the V2 Rasterisers and some custom resolution settings. All the original tracks, original graphics/visual, the original cars (including the unlicensed "Murusama" and "Conventry" cars), the original car sounds and audio, and (i think) the original physics, unless I made some mistakes in there. I spent a decent amount of time tweaking and messing with the files and making sure it was as close to the original as possible.

I must admit I'm curious to "go back in time" and remind myself what GPL looked like when I first played it in 1998. I had a Pentium 2 200MHz, Windows 98, I think I was still using my Orchid Righteous 3dfx graphics card, and I have no idea how much RAM I had. But I remember I had to turn off most of the scenery in GPL to get a decent frame rate. It was quite amusing to drive round the Nurburgring, reaching the 'Adenauer Forst' (Adenauer Forest) and seeing nothing but open green grass!

Hello,

I've been trying to find a way to install from my CD but i cant seem to get to the installation even in compatibility mode.

Is there a way to change the setting on the GPLPS Installer to make it like vanilla?

Which error message do you get when you try to install the GPL CD from your CD drive?
Which operating system are you using (Windows 10, 7, ...)?

You can use the vanilla tracks directly from the CD

Installer lets you choose if GPLEA cars or not.

Rasterizer would be a problem old systems were 16bit!

By "original physics" you do not mean V1.0 of GPL;  you definitely want the first "official" patch, which primarily corrected some physics anomalies that slipped in to the original release.  To my knowledge all subsequent work on GPL was to graphics and sound, until true mods appeared with their own physics.

Have you set all relevant exe files to "run as administrator"?  Also, do not install to any "Program Files" folder.
