Howdy all 😁

Anybody give me a couple of links, or info, on what programmes to use for recording games, so I can upload to sites like YT.

Thinking of doing some Let's Play (LP) stuff, from some of my classic games library.

Some tips too would be good.

Questions:

1- Do I need a top notch programme, or will budget suffice.

2- Will I have to pay for something decent

3- Will I need an all singing and dancing PC. To avoid lag, or other issues.

4- How do I record voice over. Do I need a mic or is voice recording, built into the software programme.

Any other tips and info, that I've failed to think of, will be appreciated.

1. I've used OBS and Bandicam for recording. OBS is free but a little bit more coplicated and the output quality isn't always great. Especially the video compression artifacts can be bad. Bandicam is a one-time purchase but it works and runs great, It's easy and good.
2. You can try OBS and see if the video quality is good enough for you.
3. Not really, especially Bandicam is very well optimized. You will get lower framerates in modern games though when you record while the cpu is under heavy load.
4. You can record all the video and audio input you like, so also a microphone.

OBS is free, Bandicam has a free version with a watermark and 10 minute recording cap. I would try both to see if you think Bandicam is worth a purchase.
If you have a AMD or nvidia gpu you can also try their recording software. I've tried AMD relive but the video quality is like OBS, not so great.

*Also, when you want to buy Bandicam put it in the shopping cart but don't check out. I don't know if it's still the same, but when I left it in the cart for 2 days I got a mail with a 20% discount.

This is a interesting thread for me too. Not because I'm thinking of becoming a YouTube star (can I have your autograph TP? ) but I've often thought of trying to make a short video to illustrate a point I'm trying to make. For example, when I was asking about camera distortions in GPL replays. I'll be watching the incoming advice with interest. Thanks for asking this, TP.

No seriously glad I asked here, for advice. Sometimes Google research is not enough, and you get more of a human input, from all our members. Unless they're Alien 😂

Millennium I think I'm going to possibly bite the bullet and purchase Bandicam. At least when the moths have flown away and out of my wallet 😁  May consider the Bandicam + Bandicut. Or maybe I'll settle for the standard pack 🤔 Either way, gotta be worth it, with it been a one off buy for life.

The programs I use:
- Bandicam -> for capturing and taking ingame screenshots; works great with good results and the price is ok for a life time key
- VirtualDub (64-bit) -> for cutting the captured GPL scences and to cut off the black bars of GPL on top and bottom and to save it with a codec
- CyberlLinkPower Director (64-bit) -> for creating the movie, adding music, special effects, ...

I only use VirtualDub for GPL. Other captures I directly edit within CyberlLinkPower Director.

If you don`t want to buy a movie editing software you could use the freeware Windows Movie Maker. It is not longer supported by Microsoft but it still works on Windows 10 (I have recently installed for a friend on a Windows 10 laptop). It is part of the Microsoft Windows Essentials 2012. During installation you can only install the Windows Movie Maker and untick all other programs.

For editing and such I use Davinci Resolve by the way, it has a free version that has pretty much everything I need. It does have system requirements that are quite high, but it runs okay on my 2013 pc with an i5. I don't use a special program to cut off the black bars in GPL replays, just 128% zoom in editing. It gets the same result.

Stefan's method for removing the bars might actually be easier for editing, otherwise you have to set 128% zoom for every clip in your timeline (which I still do).

I use Bandicam for most but GPL works best for me with FRAPS. I use sony vegas to edit.

Robert are you using FRAPS with Windows 10?
FRAPS (full version) didn't work for Windows 10 anymore, that's why I switched to Bandicam.

Don't see why I'd revert to Win7. I'm fine with my Win10

I use Bandicam, at least they still develop that software and it works fantastic.
FRAPS has received no update in 6 years!

Additionally I use Nvidia GeForce Experience when I decide to do some livestreams.

For editing I use VideoPad, but I'd welcome a editor that either demands much less of my processor, or I need to buy a new one

+1 for OBS, while it's a bit complicated and sometimes hard to get it work for some machine. But once you find a good setting, it's the best opensource recording and streaming app out there that is totally free.

However a few things about OBS:

New versions (since 2017 i think) disabled opengl recording by default, and I couldn't find a way to able to.

The last version that works with GPL for me is version 0.16 (have been using it for years, works on win8/10), which can be found here:

OBS recording requires special setting to be smooth and high quality (as well as performance). The key things are:
Setting CPU Preset: Ultrafast, this one is important (takes a lot trial and error to find out...), as it mostly disables any extra encoding (which eats a lot CPU) during recording, which make recording smooth and very unlikely getting lag. Since it disables extra encoding, the image quality will be low on low bit-rate setting, that why it is also important to set recording bit-rate/quality to very high (or max), usually over 40000 (I usually use 80k in new version, then encoding to lower bit-rate with video editor).

PS: just for reference, my PC is 5 year old i5 4440 with r9 270, can handle 1080p 60fps just ok (as long as the game has over 70fps).

About video editing tool, there are two very good ones I'd recommend: Avidemux & Kdenlive, both are free & opensource.

Avidemux is very good for quick simple editing task such as cutting, jointing, encoding&transcoding, crop&resize, color adjusting etc.
One selling point for me is, it can losslessly cut & combine videos according to keyframe, which is very handy. Also the encoding setting is very good and powerful.

Kdenlive, on the other hand, is an extremely powerful all around editing tool, with so many and powerful features (multi-track, timeline, lots audio&video effects etc), it is as good as some of the commercial alternatives imo. Highly recommended.
