Since I got the F1 2018 game. I can't believe, what today's drivers have to do, during race and laps of a circuit. This of course, is transferred to the SIM racing experience. See below:

https://youtu.be/TC1z0TaamMU

Sim drivers, in game, try to achieve  all these actions, on their chosen controller, and its a challenge in itself. It's not like you, set up a car and drive the rubber of it. By applying the correct techniques. No you have to spin plates and multitask, while trying to keep your car on track and try to be competitive.

Why oh why, is all this required. Is this  racing or on track management. Gimmicks and micro aids, designed to help a car overtake another. Due to the overkill of aero design. Real life F1 drivers of today are not drivers but micro technicians, balancing an imaginary laptop on their knee, whilst trying to drive quick. It's all about getting one up on the other, through fuel, tyres and battery management. So all in all you adjust (whilst driving) Ers, fuel mix, diff and break bias. As well as drs too. A hell of a lot going on here. You can set Ers to auto too. I kind of enjoy the challenge, but can't help think it's taking me away from the pure driving and racing experience 🤔

https://youtu.be/3PWO49MOXb4

Is this the reason why, F1 is slowly falling in interest for most people. Is it time to change back to more holistic and root based racing. As we had in the good old days.

Your comments welcome and thank you upfront, for any input. Maybe Chase Carey and Liberty media (who own F1) are reading. Accessing this site and studying your comments. If not maybe they should. So they can bring back the classic racing of F1. Is this what the fans really deserve 🤔

Formula 1 follows the road of where technology is going.
Which are all about electronics, alternative sources of energy and what not of complex bollocks which mostly just attract geeks and nerds.

I also am in mind that even though the F1 are trying to make races more exciting, they are missing the point on that.
It needs to stay simplistic and the FIA/sport needs to be much more liberal. Entertainment should be the priority, which I think is in racing at its purest core.

For geeky stuff and technology they should make a Formula T.

If he's going to sit on the rollbar to drive the car he might as well leave it all on auto. How do you change all those settings without an F1 wheel?

I think if a game is to be called a sim there should only be cockpit view to drive in.

Instead of all these gadgets to make a V6 go faster. They should have left the V10 in them with no gadgets. When you want to pass you step on the throttle more. Simple.

It's alien for me, to drive this game, infact any racing game, in this bird cage view. From behind the drivers head. I go with the view, that puts me, just in front of the on-screen wheel. A lower profile, with a more realistic challenge and reward, when you hit an apex.

Also my fingers and thumbs, frantically working away, while inputting all my actions, on a gamepad 😂

That reminds me of a track I grew up with John. A little different, it was a dirt oval. Small, I think 1/5 mile, maybe 1/4 mile. They raced what they called modified stock cars. Old 37-38 Ford coupes with late model V8's and bid dirt tires. Everybody went to those races every Sat night. It seemed like every gas station had a Modified Stock car parked out front. The gas station at the end of my street had one. The guy's name was Murphy. He used to let me help him work on it. I was just a little squirt and wanted to be just like him.

Then as I got older I got a taste of road racing and there went my dirt track stock car career. :)

My god that is awesome... :o

America has much more exciting types of races anyway nowadays. I still watch F1, but I agree with everything said above that it's no longer pure racing.
I want to see raw power, not electronics and fuel saving bullshit. They can keep that to the folks who like to drive around in a Prius.

I can't imagine racing those cars without a wheel.

They have the game on sale right now for $18. I'm tempted to try it for that price.

I'm a sucker for sales. I just bought it. I can't try it until Monday when my pedals show up.

I can't believe I bought a modern F1 game.

I have a wheel Pete and used it for the game.
But due to many personal reasons and laziness, I get the gamepad out instead.

Hope you take to the game and like it 🤔 I know it'll never replace GPL or any other of your SIM racing games.

Just a couple of tips, I've picked up.

If you do your own offline career, I found that to get full weekend sessions (all practice sessions and 100% laps) you have to choose the hardest difficulty level. If your okay with that, that's fine. But I've been told (not tried yet) when your sat at your laptop, in the team race hq, you go to a session and it starts to load up that session. If you press the start or options button, you get an hidden settings page, to tweak the settings to you. I haven't tried this yet, so I'm not sure it works.

Also during career, you can spend your resource points into these areas of durability, power unit, aero and chassis. Apparently during the season the dynamics of the game can change the types of developments and what you can or cannot do. So if you throw all your resource points at one area, it may be wasted, because the FIA may dynamically make changes to that area and in other words all your points and hard work are lost. So in other words spread your points about to all areas. Up to you, or you can gamble and concentrate on one specific weak area for your car, and hope the FIA don't handicap your development.

Lastly during practices you can just practice and concentrate on your setups. But it is advantageous to combine your setup tests with special tests that your team want you to do. Such as track familiarisation, tyre and fuel tests. Doing these earn you resource points (if successful) for your own car development. There are lots of YouTube video on how to pass these tests, but at first they are a challenge.

Also note you can have Ers on auto, instead of you manually doing it and I think ( in camera options) you can turn off the halo 🤔

Unless your going to just drive in time trial 🤔👍

At first, I need to learn all the tracks. Then do career mode. I watched one video of a guy doing the 1st race in career mode. he was complaining about how aggressive the AI were and I have to agree. They were diving in front of him and knocking him sideways going down the straights. He had the AI set on 90%.

I normally leave the AI set on a high setting but if there's an aggressive choice too i'll set it on clean driving. Does it have that? I'll loose interest in it if the AI keeps knocking me off the track.

I'm also starting up with Assetto Corsa Competizione too. So, we'll see which one draws my interest. I've watched enough of ACC and the AI don't look that bad.

I'm afraid to say Pete, that the AI have been annoying for me. Out of my first two gp's ( Australia, Bahrain) in every session ( practice, qualy and race) I was shoved off the track, due to my difficulty setting. Hopefully I can change this, with the hidden settings page. Problem is after you get pushed off, your car needs repairing (lost session time) and even knock you out, of that particular session, due to terminal damage.

Also they have an habit to do the latter, while your doing a say fuel or tyre test. Mucking up your chance of gaining resource points.

I feel that the first time you play the game it ranks up and is saying "Up yours" your not gonna get any chance to show your driving skill immediately. Bit now I have found also that the AI is getting better and not only starting to leave me alone but let me develop 😁👍

I have Assetto Corsa too and find it a good drive. The AI is decent and physics are good too and close to simulation. I also have Project Cars 2 which is good. Lots of content, but I find AC as better physics IMO.

Well, I went in to start to set it up. Right off the bat i'm annoyed, because it has no mouse control. Cripes! This is 2019! I think I might have wasted $18.

You have AC. Do you have ACC? It's still in early release.

I know I won't like it. I just watched another career race. I put in for a refund.

I want to give ACC a chance anyway.

Hi Pete

Sorry to hear your not happy with the F1 game.

I think a lot of purchases are geared towards the fact it's modern F1 and if your a fan, your then gonna snap it up. It as some really good points and the career is very addictive. Especially the development part and the rule changes, as well as driver movement, over the career years.

Codemasters though just can't get the ai aggression right though. Never have and I'm not sure they ever will 🤔 The ai is just too unrealistic and wrong. You get grid place penalties, for them running into you, when your slowing and gearing down for an hairpin like La Source.

Crossed wires on AC. It's AC that I've got. Not ACC.
