Hi lads,

one thing that always bothered me in GPL is that your car can suffer failures if mistreated but it does never, never, break down due to a random failure. It does happen to the AI, with them having random suspension, engine or gearbox trouble (one time I even saw one of them losing a wheel altogether on a straight, like what happened to Massa in real life some year ago), but that does never happen to you as player. Is this something that can be fixed by some magic from Lee? or is it hardcoded?

I think your car can break down due to random failure - but it is only ever an engine blowout, never any other kind of failure. Also, the chances of it happening are extremely low compared to the AI - like maybe one race in 50 if you are doing Long races but not full GP distance.

I understand the random failures are hardcoded in the exe but I would really love a tool to modify them. I do all my racing against the AI and would much rather I had roughly the same chance of a failure they have. Over the course of a championship it makes it much easier to win.

I gave a wrong answer.  A misunderstanding.

That'll work for the AI right? They won't suffer from random failures that way

Yes, gpla67.ini is a settings file for the AI.

I see, I prefer though to have myself random failures rather than not having the AI suffer them :( I hope that can be worked out somehow

I'd like the idea of an advanced damage model. With the driver being able to influence the chance of breaking. Just random failures are frustrating, yes they happen, but the way one arrives at them should be influenceable.

I agree with leon. The same bothered me on other sims too. The problem is that you have no much info to know what is happen on the car. Suppose we have a brake failure (fluid leak). In a real car the brake pedal goes all the way down. But here we only experience a brake performance loss...how i know what is happen?...can be my pedals...can be tire temperature and so on...
What with a gearbox failure...can be my shifter...it´s real or virtual the problem?

I must admit that my idea was much simpler, to just have some part breaking down randomly (according to the car weak spots of course, but that is already taken in account in GPL). As it is now, you can break down the car (mainly the engine, but I had also suspension failures on very harsh tracks like the Monza bankings) by not driving it well. What I miss is that random component of having a valve burst for example, or an oil spill, or a suspension breaking, etc. F1 cars have always been very fragile and even by driving them with white gloves on, something could break just because.

All of that already happens with the AI, so I would like to have the same deficit too. Everything would be more immersive and level the gap with the AI

Yes, I don't want to stop the AI getting failures, I want to increase the chance of me getting them.

Yeh, I agree here too guys. It would be good if the player had an increased chance of these failures. It would make things much more realistic.

All Papyrus games from Indycar Racing 1 till Nascar Racing 3/Nascar Legends have suach option as 'Random Breakdowns'. It can be turn on and off from game menu. When it is active player car can suffer random failures through the race. Such failures (most of them engine related) results in player has to retire from race.

I don't know if such option was hidden in GPL.exe. But I think random engine failures happens with player.

I don't know for sure but NR2003 has random failures too. According to this topic https://www.simracing...eakdowns.37535/ it was possible to turn off random failures in Multiplayer only in NR2002. NR2003 doesn't have such option.

I see. What I know is that in 15 years of GPL I never once retired due to a car failure, so I guess that random failures (not due to the driver driving style), cannot happen. As I said, I saw AI lose an entire wheel on a straight due to a suspension failure. That never happened to me. Driving a Lotus it should be a very consistent probability yet it does never happen.

Oops, think I'm in the wrong thread here...sorry.
Had to read thru it a few times to figure that out.

This topic seems too close to the veil between reality and fantasy and the difference between a game and a simulator.

If its a game and made too easy for sure its no fun to win.
If its a simulator...you don't so much care about winning?

Would it be more of a challenge to win if the AI broke down less often?
(Understanding that is probably less realistic).

:D
