It's not only pulled me away from the '67s, but after driving the Lotus 49 again briefly, I'm not sure I can go back.

This is much more fun, much more rewarding, far more realistic. How can the GPL engine be capable of such a driving experience when it's 20 years old next year?

Just FYI:

The 1950s and 1960s were very dangerous times for drivers.  Many did not survive their racing careers.  Of the 19 AI drivers, 6 died in racing accidents, 2 died in public road accidents, and another had his racing career cut short by an accident.

Here is a list of the 1955 Mod AI drivers and their fates:

Hawthorn--died in a Jaguar sedan on a public road near Guildford, England only a few months after he won the 1958 Drivers Championship and retirement from racing.  Reports indicate that he was racing Rob Walker, owner of the Rob Walker Racing Team and heir to his family's Johnnie Walker whisky company fortune, in his Mercedes 300SL.

Schell--died in a Cooper F1 at Silverstone, England in 1960.

Manzon--survived

Bayol--survived

Brooks--survived

Behra--died in a Porsche 550 at Avus in Berlin, Germany in 1959.

Mieres--survived

Musso--died in a Ferrari F1 at Reims, France in 1958.

Collins--died in a Ferrari F1 at the Nurburgring, Germany in 1958.

Gonzalez--survived

Farina--died in a Lotus Cortina on a public road while driving to the French Grand Prix at Reims in 1966.

Trintignant--survived

Ascari--died in a Ferrari sports car test at Monza, Italy in 1955.

Castellotti--died in a Ferrari sports car test at Modena, Italy in 1957.

Villoressi--survived

Fangio--survived

Moss--survived, but was seriously injured in a Lotus F1 at Goodwood, England in 1962 which ended his racing career.

Kling--survived

Taruffi--survived.

Still pretty amazing that in 50's with almost same horse powered cars was less fatal accidents in World Championship races than in 60's. 1950-1959 Marimon, Musso, Collins, Lewis-Evans 1960-1969 Stacey, Bristow, von Trips, de Beaufort, J.Taylor, Bandini, Schlesser (Is someone missing?). Also it was some fatal accidents in Non-Champ rounds but still it's pretty interesting that 50' was bit safer? Or had drivers just more luck? :)

What a great video there!!   Can I ask how you captured it?   I've done some laps at Dundrod and Isle of Man in the Lancia D50 that might also help promote the 55 mod.   They're not record breakers like yours!!  (4:16 Dundrod and 10:08 10:00 at IOM) but fun to look at in hi-res.

Nice lap Paul. Wasn't able to beat it....yet ;) 55 mod is a lot of fun, but 67s will always be the holy grail, for me. :)

I finally got a chance to install and try the Mod today. Outstanding work, very high quality - exactly what sets GPL apart. Worth waiting for, many many thanks to everyone involved.

Does pribluda accurately report engine data for the 55 mod?

About five competitive laps at Monza in the Mercedes and it shows my oil temp is 205-210deg (200+ is red), back off enough to drop the temp and I'm 6-8 seconds off pace.  OTOH, I can run a dozen laps at speed, ignoring the oil temperature, with no problems.  This is curious since in all my testing with all the cars I've experienced three engine failures ...all in the Mercedes, all at low speeds.

Which brings my next question - what is the reliability of the various cars?

And when I think of all those nice tracks waiting in GPL....
Try Dundrod, Isle of Man and then the Mille Miglia.

I've done a 9:54.97 at the Isle of Man and a 4:10 at Dundrod ... both in the Lancia D50.    I was surprised that you can do a tricky circuit like the Isle without running out of brakes.   It takes very judicious use of the gears to slow the car and the red light came on briefly only twice I think.    Love to see some of the hot shoes doing some laps there.
