As mentioned in the notes, it's not possible to have a completely clear sky as the fog effect is always active.  So even at extremely low density values, the distant horizon including the sky will be obscured somewhat.  The effect differs from track to track.  Many tracks have a distant horizon which will always be obscured while some tracks, such as Monaco, have a closer horizon and aren't obscured as much.

Even if it were possible, I don't think a completely clear sky is realistic for a weather patch as typically rain and fog don't go from pea soup conditions to unlimited visibility in a short time.

There were several technical challenges that had to be overcome for the patch.  Getting it to work well offline was relatively easy, but ensuring that all online players see the same fog density at the same time, but still using random changes for variety was tough.  As you know, online player can join the server at different times which greatly complicates things.

I also spent several days trying to get the cars to display spray behind the tires.  I succeeded in getting one or sometimes two cars to do this and it is a cool effect, but I couldn't get all cars to do so.  :wshI:

No worries man: it's always a great thing to see nonetheless. We all appreciate greatly your work, I just thought that giving my two cents would be useful for a feedback :)
Also... spay behind cars? Oh boy, that would be complete madness in the back end of the pack. I hope some day someone finds the way to do it (I would love to, but I don't know ::crap:: about coding in Python and how it links to GPL ^^; )

I seem to recall someone trying to change the properties of the tarmac, so it gave off dust clouds the same way as if you drove through sand/gravel/dirt. I seem to recall that only five cars at any one time could display the smoke. Some kind of limitation with the graphics engine, it seems.

Lee, would it be possible to add that effect, even if only one or two cars? That would be very, very spectacular !!
Thanks in advance.

Hi Lee
Thanks to you and all involved for your work that will improve realistic driving once more.
Seems though my rig is too slow again since using your new patch affects the controlling of my car.
With best regards
Alter

I am a huge fan of your patches Lee :D and have used your weather patch for a long time now.  After qualifying in the dry for the Nurbugring 1000km, I turn on the weather patch for the actual race.  Spectacular!  Apart from the most apt ambience, it allows me to be somewhat competitive and to move up the field, ending in the top 3.  This leads me on to your V2 weather patch ...

I downloaded it, and gave it a run at the said race ... very, very slippery!  Fog effect seems to be more subtle over V1 but, at my first attempt,  grip seemed to be way down.  In fact, I couldn't get off the line due to excessive wheel spin and even the AI were getting sideways at the start of the race  .  I subsequently crashed, exited, turned off the head movement patch and things seemed to be much easier upon my next attempt ... not sure if this is a random coincidence or if I am simply imagining it.

Are there significant changes in V2 over V1?

Thanks again for everything you do to keep GPL the best classic racing experience possible, Lee!

Ed

Edit: I forgot to activate the Tire Pressure Bug Fix Patch before trying V2, and now things are awesome again! :woot:

I could, but it really isn't ready for prime time yet.  It's on the back burner now, but I will try again to make it work for all cars some day.

Ed, glad to hear its working OK for you.  To be sure, I just tested at the Ring with '67 Lotus and didn't have any problem with rear tire grip at the race start even though the wet grip was 13% lower than dry.

There is no difference between v1 and v2 as far as the player tire grips go.  The main difference between the two patches is that v1 always used a fixed fog density that was set at start while v2 varies it on the fly.

Our league (oAo) schedules a race in Mosport rain, we could use the Wather Patch with the original Monsport and that all participants are obliged to enter the server with the Patch, in other words: it could be detected that some participant by "Distraction" do not have the patch?
Thanks in advance.

I came up with the same question while I was beta testing.
No, that is not possible. You can`t force all clients to use the patch or detect if anyone is not using the patch.

Wait this is coded in Python? I was under the impression it was some obscure assembly language, if its Python I'd like to know more about this.

No, the patch was coded in assembly language.

Problem! I can't get it work with the new Sportscar mod. When I click on the green button it crashes GPL to desktop...

Same with the old 1.0 weather patch... (Which I seriously need to work for our Bathurst 15h challenges...)

Any thoughts?

It could be that GEM+ can't patch the existing mod .exe.  Be sure to delete it prior to applying the patch.  See here:

We once had fun race with new Sportscar mod + Weather patch 2.14 and didn't have any problems.
