So if technically no one is using the licence to sell GPL, does that mean it is freeware now? Or is there a time limit for the licence to expire?

There's a time limit I think. Legally speaking just there's no distribution at the moment. Abandonware.

Abandonware is a legal grey area as I understand it. Given how IRacing handled Nascar03 mods back in the day I'd rather not do something that might make them notice GPL. Especially considering the 04demo provides full functionality sans 10 original tracks (which aren't that hard to get either.)

GPL is Abandonware?
How can this happen? Is there no hope for humanity? The whole world is going to hell on a handcart!

I dont see how that is something bad, or new for that case. GPL hasn't seen any involvement from Papy or Sierra for a long long time. Still its doing allright not least due to the efforts of this community.

Paid £6.50 for mine. Was grubbing around in the shed looking for something else & found my original copy in a box some old computer components... so if anybody needs a copy I have a spare! Must be the mad cow thing..... I can't remember. Proceeds to the forum! drop me a pm. It's the sold out software version. But works well enough with the installer. Don't you just love moving house?

As indicated in USPTO info (post #19) they canceled trademark December 2, 2006.
Not being a trademark attorney or knowing anything much about it, it appears they already gave up rights to "computer game programs and instruction manuals sold as a unit," and therefore, as there is no source code either, have nothing to sign over.
With Papy gone there is maybe no one to sign their nothing away.
