Hi all,
I use Flight Simulator X a lot, when I'm not GPL'ing and one of the great things an add-on Payware vendor has come up with is a persistent aircraft.
That means that the when you start FSX the aircraft is in the same state you left it last flight, including fuel and oil levels and levels of engine and component wear. The aircraft even degrades over time especially if you don't use it and the virtual mechanic tells you off! It really adds a new level of experience to the sim, that of ownership.
If it can be added to the core functionality of FSX, I wonder if it's possible to do the same in GPL?
Would be great having to look after your car/s across the season or multiple races. Would make me more careful in how I treat the engine, tyres etc during races. A virtual mechanic would also be great.
Any thoughts, or has this been discussed before?

Not that I know of. Racecars tend to be rebuild fairly regularly so I dont think it would add much to the game.

In general adding something to the way GPL works is hard from what I understand. But if you just care about a managerial aspect added to the game, you could do it outside GPL.
In the simplest form you can give youself a budget and track damages, earnings, running costs etc.

You can join the oAo league. They use a system that's similar to what you're talking about.

To simulate that you could use textures with wear.
Then there's the option to change the chance of errors.
All of that could be set in a batchfile that replaces those files over time.
Maybe simulate a privateer like Carel Godin de Beaufort who drove a ragged old Porsche for several seasons :)

Mech,

In your second line, do you mean the chance of the player's car breaking down? I thought that was set in the .exe and can't be adjusted?

No the ai, if your car ages so do the ai.
Also the starting accelerate value could be adjusted.

But asyou mentioned it would be nice to regulate those values for the player aswell :)

Similarly I have always craved for an add on to gpl failure. Where if you have a low percentage of damage/breakdown there is a small chance of repair when going back into the pits and therefore getting back out there with full repair percentage or part so it is more drivable than when you first entered. Obviously if the repair/damage is too severe (ie wheel/s off or similar) then its game over.
I  am not sure if this is possible as a add on but would it be historically correct. Mentioned this before in other threads.
Would be great though along with a weather add on dynamic or static.
I think papy had looked at things like this before game release but couldn't do it or in time?
Would add to my enjoyment of this great sim !

Sounds like one of Olaf's patches? The one with pit repair, in contrast to Lee's pitstop patch.

Thanks for the replies all. I like the idea of a Privateer Mod. Would there be much support for it? I haven't got the skills to build it unfortunately.
