Here’s the rundown of other stuff that’s new this month:
  • The Group B RWD, Hillclimb and Kit Cars have been upgraded to v2 handling.
  • Now that all cars are up to v2 spec, the Self Aligning Torque has been re-balanced to support the new handling
  • We found the spanners and wrenches that adjust the seats in all of your cars. Mind your head!
  • The Logitech G920 is now fully supported.
  • We also changed the mapping for Gears, Look Back, Clutch and Replay on the Logitech G29.
  • The Clutch, Look Up and Seat Adjustment keys have been remapped on QWERTY / AZERTY keyboards to save your fingers and thumbs
  • The SimXperience AccuForce Pro Steering System is now fully supported.
  • You can now tune your immersion levels by customising your OSD options, choosing between On, Countdowns Only and Off.
  • The Logitech G29 wheel is now correctly listed in the controller preset menu.
  • Custom Championships now reward you with the correct number of credits.
  • There’s a new EULA to sign when you boot the game, which asks you to kindly behave yourself when you’re playing with others.
  • Your favourite pet mouse has learnt a new trick, and can now change the livery on your car.
  • If you own an Owner’s Club event, you will now correctly own the Owned achievement.
  • If you pledge a wedge to an online Wager Event and the event ends while you’re on stage, we’ll give you your CR back.
  • Your Oculus Rift can now be toggled to lock the horizontal orientation. Look for a flag in the hardware configuration file.
  • Sliders on the Advanced Racing Wheel Options screen now increment at the same rate as the Steering and Pedal calibration screen.
  • Your Service Crews are back from their training course and will now correctly setup your car for multi-location events.
  • Stopped one set of Rallycross results from appearing on a Rally leaderboard.
  • You no longer need to hold the headlight control to activate your lights. You can now just tap that.
  • Windows accounts with accented and non-latin characters will now correctly save game settings.
  • Fixed a weird bug where the camera would briefly flick back to the default position at the start of a stage after customising the seat position.
  • @Kick_Up will now politely and calmly inform you if your wheels fall off, and if you’re going the wrong way.

Comparison of the real Rallycross track HELL and the Dirt Rally version:

-> as Codemasters has the official FIA World Rallycross Championship (https://www.fiaworldrallycross.com/) licence the tracks look like the real thing as you can see from the movies.
-> I think that we will see more tracks because of that licence. Here is the 2016 calender with 12 tracks: https://www.fiaworldr...ss.com/calendar
I didn`t know they race this in Germany (Hockenheimring). Posted Image

Interesting. They seem to have neglected Japanese cars and Africa. They're not going to get my money until they get the Group B Toyota Celica Turbo and Nissan 240RS. Plus a 1971 Datsun 240Z, 1971 BMW 2002TI, and a late 60s Porsche 911 would make it irresistible to me.

You'll never get it then. :(

Codemasters don't have the Toyota licence and aren't going to get it. It looks more likely that beyond some bug fixes and minor tweaks they will move to a new game engine as the current one has reached its limits from what I have read and so anything further would require a new way of going about it. Apparently that is also the limitation with trying to do the Dakar for instance as the engine can't cope with more free-form map types and they have also possibly hit some other limits with stage lengths etc., all of which will hopefully be addressed if / when they move to a new engine and make DiRT Rally 2.

Part of the problem is still the market though, and I guess it will all depend on sales for this one, and also how it goes on console, (which was released on 5th April). It is a hard game as it is fairly realistic but that turns off casual gamers, (as Papy found out). Those who like simulations seem to love it, (but also fervently do not want it to get dumbed down, although even for hardened sim racers it has something of an initial learning curve), but for casual players migrating from previous recent DiRT titles there are no ultra easy modes, or racing lines for you to follow or other pointless gimmicks. It also really benefits from using a wheel, so again that will limit the potential market. In all cases you can't just pick it and win your first event and most people will end up half way up a tree with smoke pouring out of the radiator within the first couple of hundred yards! It probably took me 20 or 30 hours before I really got to understand the handling and techniques until I started to really enjoy it and over 100 hours before I started winning at the higher difficultly levels and in the more mental cars.

It's still a possibility. The two rwd Group B rice burners I mentioned would hasten my purchase though. The Group B era was the last time I paid much attention to rallying. The Safari Rally in Kenya and the Rallye Côte d'Ivoire always reflected one of the reasons I've driven so many Nissans and Toyotas. They may not be the fastest but they were good reliable cars that usually get you where you're going. My first car was 1983 Celica GT. It was nothing like the rally car. It didn't even have a dual cam engine, but I drove it like a rally car at times. It's demise was even similar to a rally car. I hit a rock in the middle of a dirt road after sliding over the crest of a hill. 5 minutes later while returning home on the highway, I noticed I had no oil pressure. I immediately stopped but the damage was done. The rock had put a 1+ inch hole in the oil pan. With a trashed number 1 rod bearing and a front bumper that had suffered other "rallying" incidents, I wasn't willing to pay the costs for repair.

I thought that might have something to do with it. With Toyota becoming such a behemoth now, I thought they might have become a company that would demand extortion for licensing rights.

I suspected that too. I wasn't necessarily thinking about Dakar, but the Safari Rally and the Rallye Côte d'Ivoire are similar with long stages. They both got close to 5000km in three stages with only a few to several dozen control points. I also thought it might be incredibly difficult to accurately map either of them, even if they only did a few small sections. Plus, there's no telling how much the roads have changed since the mid 80s. Although it wouldn't surprise me much if they are still very similar.

I do find the sim very interesting for all the other Group B cars it has. The Lancia 037 has always been one of my favorite cars. The Opel should give you a taste of what the Toyota and Nissan would have been like too. Maybe they'll get the 240RS some day. I like the sound of that engine.

That is a very valid point. Something with DiRT Rally is that the stages that it has are genuine real rally stages. The DiRT forums also have threads were you can see the Google Earth of the actual stages with the game map overlays, so they really have gone to town on proper authenticity in that regard. Something else with DiRT actually is that in most locations in reality the two long stages for that location actually join up with each other either directly or via a very short missing link of road such that they could potentially be joined and run as a single 20 km stage, (run then in either direction), which while not adding any more variety or total new miles of road, would certainly add to the challenge as the driver now has to concentrate for double the time on those stages and that certainly would be a bit more hardcore. That might however not be possible due to the game engine limitations, but, if it were possible then that certainly would be an interesting potential development.

Something else some people have gone on about, which again won't happen is either a track editor for it, or some sort of procedural stage generator that would create new generic stages on the fly. This stuff might make it to DiRT Rally 2 (if there is one), but is not going to happen in this incarnation, so on a lot of levels this probably is going to be all there is in terms of content for it, expect maybe a couple more Rallycross tracks may get added, as Codemasters do have the FIA licence for that series so we may get current season liveries in that plus another RX venue or two. It must cost a lot to produce the stages they have made in the detail they have them though, and so to add more venues now would cost too much to recoup as DLC I would have thought, especially if they are moving to a new game engine for a new version as that effort might then simply have to be duplicated in the (hopefully near) future.

Personally I'd love to have some more tarmac in Corsica and even though it is not WRC, maybe also in Ireland or the Manx, or on Mull in Scotland. :) Like you I'd also be interested in the Safari, and other venues that are obviously missing are Australia, New Zealand, Spain and Portugal, which again would all add something extra and different in terms of challenge.

My big hope is that this is a stepping stone to another rally sim that will follow where more of the above is included or at least possible, but I guess there we have to just wait and see. For now, what we do have isn't bad and still has enough interest and replay appeal that 200+ hours in I am still happy to take part in the daily, weekly and monthly time trials and do a few league events. :)
