I'm happy to announce the release of GPL Engine Sound (GPLES) v1.0 which is a patch that provides multiple engine sounds.

GPLES enhances the player experience by providing multiple engine sounds in place of the single sound that GPL has always used.  Of all my patches, this patch was by far the most difficult and took the longest to produce.

Some of you may remember Maxim's old GPL Sound Overlay (GPLSO) program which also provided multiple engine sounds; however, GPLSO was an external program that ran simultaneously alongside GPL.  When it was first released, many computers didn't have the speed to do this well and users often complained that GPLSO was difficult to set up and use.  The GPLES patch, on the other hand, uses GPL's internal sound system so that the new engine sounds are played exactly like all other GPL sounds.  This method is much easier to set up and use.

The attached files provide everything you need to get started.  Please read the GPL Engine Sound Quick Start Read Me for instructions on how to copy the necessary files to your GPL installation and immediately start playing the new engine sounds.  Included in the Read Me is a FAQ section which should answer most of your questions.

I've included five sample sound sets for the 1967 F1 cars; one each for the 1967 F1 Brabham, BRM, Ferrari, Lotus, and Honda.  The sounds sets are derived from old GPLSO sound sets by Jeroen Goedhart and Gilles Ressegat.  The Brabham sound set is actually one that Jeroen made for the Thundercar V8 engines as no GPLSO Brabham sound set was ever made AFAIK.  Again to be clear, these sound sets are for the 1967 F1 "mod", but tests indicate that the sound sets and patch work perfectly with all mods.

Of course, the goal is to have a sound set for every car in every mod, but it will take time to make these sounds sets.  I am not a sound set designer myself so I'm relying on others to make these.  This is something that anyone can do and the GPL Engine Sound Loader Editor Tools Read Me includes detailed instructions on how to make and edit sound sets for yourself.  For those of you who may like doing so, I strongly encourage you to post your sound sets for others to hear and use.

The patch has already undergone extensive testing by the test team and works very well.  My thanks goes out to all test team members, but especially to Dave, Leon, and Michov who contributed much useful constuctive criticism and help.

As with any patch, there are always some minor bugs:
1.  Engine sounds continue to play after the engine blows up.  I've tried to fix this, but have been unsuccessful so far.
2.  You may hear slight volume differences in engine sound after a crash.  This doesn't always occur and sometimes fixes itself.  The easy fix is to never crash.  :)

Please read the Read Me's as they should answer most of your questions.  Your first stop should be the Quck Start Read Me.  Of course, if you have any questions I will try to answer them.

Enjoy!  :)

Lee

Bo.........It's the two text documents in the GPL Engine Sound folder.

Lee........I'm using a straight GPL install for the 67 cars right now. Can I get this to work without GEM?

Wow! Thanks to your hard work GPL is now being developed faster than rFactor2, PCars, Assetto Corsa and iRacing!.

A couple of questions:

Do these 7 new engine sounds come out of our limit of 16 total sounds in GPL set by the slider in the "Options" Page?

Also, a common complaint about GPL is that the other engine sounds when racing in a pack of cars are too loud and drown out your own engine and tyres, presumably we could now cut the volume levels of the old sound samples that the other cars use? That might allow us to run the maximum number of sounds in the "Options" menu which would add to the immersion of the game, the only downside would be quiet replays which I'm sure most people could live with.

Thanks for your efforts on this, Lee.  I'm very enthused to give this a swing.  The sounds of GPL...or any sim, for that matter...are so, so integral to the experience.

THANK YOU.

It's cool to know that community is still alive and KICKS [SMTHNG] and never gives up a chance to improve this ancient (but VERY VERY nice) piece of code.

When looking at you guys, the Digital Dark Age seems no more than a Wikipedia entry.

When the Mankind stands up before the Last Judgment, Grand Prix Legends WILL MATTER (and I'm an atheist, actually).

Again, Thank you.

No.  You must use GEM+ to create and patch the gplc67.exe file.  The gpl.exe file will continue to use the normal single engine sound.

The 7 new engine sounds do not count against the setup menu 16 sound limit.  They are played in addition.

Internally, the patch continually plays all of the 7 additional sounds, but each sound is played at different volume levels depending on the sound set designer's plan.   I adjusted their overall sound level though so that they are compatible with the AI volume.

Great!! Wow!! Thanks a lot, Lee.
For me, sound is more important than graphics and now a dream becomes true!! :bowdown2:
GPLSO was never running good enough for using permanently.

Lee,

The sorcerer get out of his home , again, I see!

Millions thanks and a passport to heaven is granted for you

Tested all five cars , and everything works ( Win 7 32 bits) PERFECT.  No bugs after crashes and manys shift + R.

the only small pb is when I explode the engine .Rpm needle goes down but the engine sound file selected by the program when it comes is still playing .I need to apply brake, and then the sound stops immediatly

I didn' t know much about Jeroen or others sound gurus, so that 's too a way to discover different sounds.
Seems on the low frequencies( in the 2000/4000 Rpm range) , there are a little less bass frequencies tones than with manys Ducwolf sounds .But that 's a rough and first tests impression maybe.

And the Honda backfiring when off throttle, ice on the cake !
