Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I have the Philippe Charuest carset and it's really nice, but i'm wondering if anyone came up with anything sonically for it.

Thanks

Might I ask how to use the F5000 Chevy sound? I'd like to incorporate it into my F5000 carsets.

Thanks for any help.

Hi BrentBlackburn, to use the F5000 Chevy sound(or any sound) for all seven chassis the process would be;
copy the Chevy sound, rename it 'bra', let it overwrite the existing 'bra' sound in your sound folder and repeat this for the other six chassis.

Backup your existing sound folder first of course and use a copy. thumbsup.gif

Of course if you use something like GPL Sound Player you don't have to do all the above, but I usually do this kind of thing manually anyway, just to be absolutely sure of not missing or losing anything.

By the way, is that the Philippe Charuest F5000 carset in your pic?
Looks good. smile.gif

Hi Carter,

Thanks for the help. The screenshot is from a 1970 UK F5000 carset that is in the works. I am not sure but I think Philippe's carset was from 1968 maybe? I'm not sure, because I can't seem to find it on the internet anymore.

I'm also working on for the 1970 Tasman Series and for the US Formula A series as well (which was one reason I was ecstatic to hear that Mark Beckman's Can-Am mod was going to add Road America, Edmonton, Mid-Ohio and Donnybrooke to the North American track base! thumbsup.gif)

Here are some more images from the UK F5000 set I'm working on.

Thanks again for the help,

Going back to Philippes carset, can anyone tell me how to get a full grid of f5000's? It mentions it in the readme, but i'm not able to get rid of those pesky BRM's, Ferrari's and Coopers. I'm off out tonite, so i'll have another try later. Iny tips would be helpfull, even if it's just to state the obvious. It has been known to work in the past laugh.gif

Carter
Hi OUTAROAD, I just installed the Philippe Charuest set this afternoon. I've just set up a full grid at Laguna Seca after reading your post and there are no BRMs, Coopers or Ferraris. I can't think how you're getting them(scratches head)huh.gif. Are you using the driver file that came with the carset?
OUTAROAD
Well, i thought i was. confused1.gif

The driver file. By that you mean the "Driver Configurations" file, the one with the info on the f5000 drivers?

sorry to seem so dumb. rolleyes.gifWhat exactly should i be doing with it.? It's currently in my player folder, the player ini has been renamed...............but nothing's happening.

Anyway.......................... cheers.gif

Outaroad
Carter
I think we've found the problem smile.gif.
The driver configurations file should just go in your main GPL folder.
If you have a look in your GPL folder as it is, you should see the standard driver file that you've been using for the 67s. It should just be called 'driver'. You need to rename that one (I usually just add 67 or original on the end) then just pop in the one that came with the F5000 carset in its place.

As always, it's best to make a copy of your original driver and stick it somewhere safe, just in case.

Hope that gets it sorted for you. If it doesn't just gimmie a shout. thumbsup.gif
OUTAROAD
Carter, thanks, done and dusted. Nothing like a bit of common sense, eh?

Have a problem in that i did it after i got in last night, a tad sozzled, and failed to backup my 67 driver file. Oh well. Not losing too much sleep over it. My Stockblock Supermen will have to do for now................... thumbsup.gif

How accurate is the Chevy engine sound posted up to my initial request? It's not much cop. Considering they were virtually all using Chevy engines by 1970................. sad.gif

It sounds not too dissimilar to the Brabham engine sound doing the rounds in the last few years. A bit flatter and more muffled tho. The GT40 sound, tho possibly inacurate in terms of F5000 is a wonderous thing to hear, especially in the Murassama/Surtees with it's never ending rev range thumbsup.gif. I found another in one of my unused soundpacks, for a BRM, which actually has the same characteristics as the GT40, but a bit higher pitched. Using the Chevy and Ron O'Dells Brabham sound for the other two makes in Phil C's carset.

Also, ducwolf's Brabham sound. Is that a V8? It's really loud too. Maybe too loud.

woot.gif

Anyone got any other interesting V8 sounds out there?

Anyway, for now.............

Nothing huh?

Too bad, that carset looked really sweet! Anyone know how to contact BrentB and see if there is any further progress on this? Maybe if he doesn't have the time/desire to complete it he might consider allowing someone else to finish it up.

Seems a shame not to get those cars out to the GPL community somehow.

Hi!

Yes, it seems like a real nice carset - and a carset, i really would like to drive.

Being mostly interested in the "historically correct" carsets, I never used the Thundercats, but a combination of Thundercat physics and F5000 1970 might be just the ticket....

Not being able to do the work myself, I would be very happy to help/assist/encourage...

Boy, it's amazing how time sneaks up on you. I hadn't realized it's been two years since I was working on that project.

At the time, I was going in many directions painting carskins for 1970/1 Tasman and Gold Star carsets, European F5000 carsets, American F5000 (Formula A) carsets, and South African F1/F5000 carsets, all of which remain in various states of completion. I kindof lost the motivation to complete them when: the trackmakers stopped making those particular period tracks and I got no help on editing carshapes. I'm strictly a painter and carshape *modifier*, not an editor.

Anyhow, sure, I can send you what I have, depending on what you want. Let me explain a little about the sets.

you said "F5000", so I am going to assume you mean the European F5000s from ca. 1969/70/71, which is the period i worked on. The set started out as Tasman Series set featuring some of my modified carshapes which I developed for that project. I then started replacing the Tasman drivers/carskins with those from F5000 ca. 1969/70, one at a time, but I never finished. So it has a few Tasman drivers in addition to several from F5000, such as Hobbs, Taylor, Gethin, Hailwood, Rollinson, Prophet, Walker, McRae, Gardner and some others. Most of the cars--in fact, all of them, I think, are converted McLarens or Hondas from early beta versions of the low-wing 69 mod. I think. It's been so long and I forgot to document anything. What I did was take some low wing carshapes from a beta Paul Skingley sent me and further modified them, 1) lowering the wings and moving them farther back by titlting the vertical struts back at an angle (crude and inaccurate, but it worked for me) 2)widening the rear wings 3) adding full face helmets from the later version of the 69 mod.

All of this was done strictly for my benefit and use and without permission from the 69 mod team, so if I send it to you you'd need to clear it with them if you wanted to release it. Heck--Paul might even want to work on it now that he has some free time. He was the one who sortof encouraged me in the beginning anyway.

I used the cars with tracks like Brands, Silverstone, Oulton Park, Hockenheim, Anderstorp, all of which held F5000 races in the early 70s.

OK, so now that you know the technical details, let me just say again that in no way did I intend or even try to make these look realistic or remotely accurate. I just wanted something that looked like early f5000s (especially Mclaren M10s, my all-time favorite formula car) that I could paint to look sortof like the cars of that era. If you're picky on details, you'll probably be disappointed. That said, I'm willing to send you whatever you like from my work to adapt for your own use. I just don't know how to bundle it up to send to you. i could do individual zip files for each make and for the driver.ini files, I guess.

Let me know what you want and I'll get it to you somehow.

Best regards,

Brent

Hi Brent!

What do I want rolleyes.gif

THAT is a hard question to answer...

Well, I am not the most gifted carsetmaker myself, and has not produced anything for anybody. So who am I to ask for anything at all...

But -

Best of all would, concerning F5000 carsets for GPL, of course be something as thoroughly researched and executde as the 65 or 69 carsets. That, however would be rather ungrateful to ask for. Wouldn´t it?

But as soon as the Thundercars were introduced, I thought I would like them a lot more if they resembled exactly the cars you mention - McLaren M10, Surtees, Lotus, Lola. And I thought that they did, well enough for me, only needed a fresh coat of paint...

Which maybe is what you have?

Or, maybe it would be your complete carset, ready to run with Thundercar physiscs...If the TC creators do not mind, that is???

Thanks a lot for your answer, anyway!

Best regards,

Jon

Hi Brent, good to see you are still working on the F5000 cars. smile.gif

As mentioned above you could use TCmod physics but as the F5000 cars are allot narrower there would be the problem of physical contact with other cars or armco when the visual reference said you should have missed them.
Also the TC engine is 7lt and has more power than F5000.

I would suggest concentrating on one series, preferably the one you have most complete. I would also suggest the 1969 or 1970 season as there is a Tasman 68 series already being worked on.

I would be willing to help you finish of the car models. It would also be possible to develop an accurate physics which would be preferable to using TCmod physics.

If all this sounds good to you we can ask Keith to set up a work space for us to continue and complete the project.

Hi Paul--good to hear from you again. 'Excellent job' to you and the 69 Mod crew for all your hard work on that project. It's fabulous.

Definitely got burned out, I think, trying to develop too many things at once. Let me take a closer look at what I have on the UK F5000s this weekend, and I'll get back in touch with you. As far as developing car physics, or doing serious editing or developing of car models, that's way above my head. If it's it to be done "right", the first thing to do is get some people involved who know the history and technical side of early F5000, who can help with decisions on what cars to include and how to get them in GPL. My general impressions are that there weren't too many F5000s in '69/'70 that were similar.

If you or anyone else wants to take what I have and adapt what I have (or not) and create a F5000 mod, that's fine by me, too. But realistically speaking, I don't have the time anymore to do more than occasionally dabble with it. Of course, that's pretty much because I went as far as I could at the time with what knowledge I had.

So let me look at it tonight and I'll give you a more complete breakdown of what I have done and where it stands.

Cheers,

Brent

How is the development of Brent's F5000 cars going? I'm running the old Philippe Charuest F5000 set with 69 physics but would love some better graphics.

Here's some inspiration- taken at Pukekohe near Auckland NZ last weekend. They're having a big F5000 revival meeting in Jan 2008. They say there will be around 25 F5000s there.
