Full Version: Playing with a keyboard

Has anybody managed a decent level of control using a keyboard?

I'm looking into the best steering wheel to get for the game and it won't be soon enough because using keys feels so clumsy and unintuitive. Its VERY difficult to control a skid when it goes too far and the steering, even when adjusted in the settings, it pretty unresponsive. The four control keys offer just full on or off with no modulation in between, the result being that getting a decent lap on anything other than the simplest tracks is a real struggle. Its still enjoyable, but the line between control and ending up in the scenery is hard to manage when crossed.

Which wheel is best for the game? I've got a Logitech Driving Force EX that I was using on a PS2 and understand that a PC/PS2 adaptor might link it to my PC and still make it fully functional.

Yes, you can reach a decent level of control with the keyboards, but it is very hard. At present I'm around 3-5 seconds per lap slower on the keyboard than with a wheel.

There are a number of extremely skilled keyboard drivers around, such as Keypad, Oliver C and Eletricman, and Keypad has a lot of setups uploaded on RSC which if you have to persist on the keyboard you will find of great use.

On the other hand, if a wheel is on its way then I agree that it won't be a moment too soon!
I'm not sure what the best available wheels are these days, but there are plenty of people around who do

How deep is your wallet confused1.gif

I have now a Logitech G25
cost me €299.- at the time
and althoug the are sheeper to get now, I stil find it a very good wheel for the money.

There are much more expensive wheels you can buy ( € 1000,- and more), but I dont know how they handle (and thats maybe better also)

If I may say so, dont buy a MOMO, I wreckt 3 sets of paddles in 2 years time.
a waist of money compare to the G25, althoug the MOMO wheel itself is OK!

I also had a Logitech force.
No Force Feedback, and not of my likings. (sold it afther a week)

Good luck.

Thanks guys. A bit of research is in order, I think smile.gif

I think the consesus at the moment is that the Logitech G25 is the best value for money wheel that includes a clutch and shift stick. You can get it from dabs.com for about £150.

I am the Eletricman smile.gif(for those ones still don't know)
Driving with a keyboard is not that nightmare, with correct setups, one thing that is not obvious is keyboards require another philosify with setups, maybe GPL becomes another game (in terms of "game engine")

Enjoying the message and RSC attachment limitations, I am posting here a replay with two merged laps:
- Bert Knops Spa Cooper 3:16.244 world record lap
- Otavio Silveira Spa Eagle 3:16.57 keyboard world record lap
It showed as a great comparison between a wheel and a keyboard. Both laps in the limit, with fast straights, and even a slow corner. Hope you enjoy watching this replay.
