Hi guys,

As some of you may know, some time ago now my graphics card (Gigabyte GeForce GTX 780 OC 3GB) died on me...

I`ve just been using the PC with the onboard graphics (Intel HD Graphics) as since the card died I`ve just been doing basic, general PC stuff. Nothing graphics intensive.

I`m wondering though if it would be possible to use 3DS Max with just the onboard graphics?

I`m sure onboard would struggle with big renders etc but I wouldn`t be doing that. Just some basic modeling to try and keep up the learning process.

I think onboard would run Max ok but it would be good to get some input.

I think it depends on the complexity of the models you do more than the program itself...

I don't use 3DS max but wings3d, which is great too and free. It's very light.  The single concern is that, if you want it to do GPL 3do, will have to save as 3ds, convert to ASE in 3dsimed and after that to 3do in ase23do.

Cheers, Marcos.

Hi Marcos,

I`m not really modelling anything too complex just now. I am learning to model cars but I`m not at the stage yet where I`d be modelling the more complex parts. I`m just getting to grips with modelling a nice, flowing body shape so I think that would maybe be ok. I have actually modeled more complex parts like wire spoke wheel rims and tyres etc but those parts could wait till I get a new card.

I`ll be getting a new graphics card for this PC as soon as I can and then sometime in the future I`ll build a complete new rig. :)

I`ve never heard of wings3d... will search for it though and take a look at it.

For now I won`t be doing any GPL 3DO`s. Maybe that`ll come in the future sometime.

Cheers

tj
